that makes no sense, complete oximoron, any way id keep it, dont let the gov get what they want, and besides if it runs good thats good enough reason too keep it, take a weekend off and get some friends and go to town on the little things.

LOL. Atleast you caught it. Instead of sending it to it's death, sell it to someone else who will appreciate it if he doesn't want to keep it. That's what I meant. :icon_thumby:

The steering issues scare me the most. A/C I can live without if I have to. Guess it's time to find some ball joints and a press.

By all means Keep-it! Use the material you have and do what repairs you can when you can with the time you have. Uou have a great machine and you will not have to go in debt further what with school loans, books, etc ahead.Having everything paid for takes a bunch of stress off the studies and life in general . GOOD LUCK

I'm actually getting quite a bit paid for. I have a scholarship that covers most of my tuition. I'm not living on campus and my apartment is a little cheaper than standard room and board rates. Money's not too bad.

Though I just talked to my mom and may have found another alternative. Since she just paid her car off she's willing continue doing car payments, albeit a little smaller for me if I can find another vehicle for commuting for around 10 grand. She's agreed to let me keep my current Ranger at the house and try to find another one. I just looked at Carmax and found some good deals on slightly used Rangers. About to go take a look and see what I can find. This would work out great as having a lifted truck with mud tires doesn't make for a very good highway driver, which is all I'll be doing. However now it looks as though she'll front me another vehicle in exchange for me paying her back after I graduate (which I sure as hell will do). Better yet my toy will be waiting the whole time. My ultimate plan was to keep it and turn it into a dedicated wheeler. Oh this could turn out good. I'll let you all know what I find.

i would keep it ball joints arent very hard to do i replaced all of mine probly take you a few hours. my ac doesnt work in michigan i can deal without it only needs charged and a seal but my heater controls are broken so if i do fix it it wont do any good seing on how i only have my heater on defrost. brakes wont be to bad either

Well things did work out well. My neighbor is an auto broker and found me an '05 Ranger Edge last Friday. It's got the 4.0, automatic, extended cab, 62,000 miles and everything works. Drives really nicely. I'll get some pics up later.

I am keeping it. It's just going to sit for now. I'll work on it on my weekends or breaks that I come home. Get it all back together and go from there.

Sounds like you got it all planned out. A/C is no big brainer. Just gotta do it the right way and it will last. For about $800, you can replace all the parts. Or $300~500 and replace only whats needed.

damn no you cant come wheeling with me and the other's i figure we are all around the same age if your goin to collage damn would been fun but your leaveing your ranger there :D its ok you can help me work on mine bwahahahahaha

well now that you have a dedicated wheeler you can slam the edge:headbang:

i would keep it. i had a chevy s10 blazer with a bad tranny which i traded in on my ranger, which im still payin on. i couldve got a tranny for the cost of one vehicle payment. dont get me wrong i love my ranger, but there was alot of times i couldve used the 300 bucks i pay on it for something else. i would just fix the stuff that would be a safety issue before you leave, and the ac of course- i know how you feel, even though i live in PA i wish i could go to the northpole for the summer. you could fix the other stuff when you have time in the long run youll save alot of money keepin it.

the problem is 200,000 id say privete sale and liik intosomthing a tad bit newer with less miless ur going to collage u dont want to have any isues in the back of ur head

That's exactly what I did. An '05 with 62,000 miles is perfect. Broken in but not tired at all.

As for lowering the new truck. No way, all the money goes to making the 4x4 bigger! Or at least it will at some point in the future.
