It would seem people do take pleasure in neglecting their tires. So folks, as a reminder to some on this board. Please check your tires pressure inflation. These pictures explain what could happen if you don't.

thats just ridiculous

on a side note, since youre the unofficial tire guy, have you ever seen a plug work its way back out of a tire?? i had one that had a bolt in it (yeah, like 1/4" and an inch long) so i pulled it out and plugged it. probably 1000 miles later, the tire goes flat and the plug is stuck on the tread.

Yes I have. Usually the DIY plugs that customers can buy are crap. I suggest those to be used only in tractors or non-highway tires. And I repaired a bad tire repair just today. I guess the last guy didn't use the correct size plug/patch and air started to leak from it.

so im better off taking it somewhere? i'd rather not spend the money if i can do it myself. i put 2 plugs in it together but ive only got maybe 100 miles on it since then.

Its just sometimes better to have it fixed right. The DIY kit costs like $5 and the tire repair is $10.75 per tire, $2 for each additional fix in the same tire. Under some shops, like the one I work at, the tires can be fixed under warrenty. So it doesn't cost you a cent more.

ok since I get conflicting stories about it, how often should you check the pressure??

not that it really matters to me cause I check mine mine evry weekend while I'm at work (I figure I have the tools, time, and air so why not) I also do a walk around visual inspection before I get in it and drive anywhere.

Generally the rule of thumb I tell clients (if they do or don't is up to them), whenever they get gas, check their tires, open the hood, and check the belt(s), and oil. It only takes 5 more minutes when gassing up and can save a lot of hassle down the road later.

Lear, how long have you been working in that tire shop? Probably half of the flat repairs I do look like that. People in Calgary have their heads shoved so far up their asses, its hard for them to put the phone down and get out of their BMW to check their tires, even if its just visually and not with a gauge, if its low enough to be a big problem, you will be able to see it.

The sad thing is so many new cars today have those damn tire pressure monitors, so it's not like you even have to necessarily check the pressures all the time. Yet people still don't set their pressure!

i have worked at discount tire for almost two years and it is ridiculous how many people dont check their air....ever..then their tires go low so they assume it must be leaking and bring it in to have it repaired.

our rule of thumb is once a month, i have found on average your tires will probably lose up to around five pounds every month.

It is recommended to at LEAST check your tires once a month.

I've been working at the Tinker AFB Care Care Center since June 2004. And ignorance can kill you. Most want the tires replaced under warrenty when they know exlusively they are the ones that driven on it flat.

It is a Coats, not sure if its 5065. But 7066a sounds right. I can confirm it today when I go to work.

TMPS (Tire Monitor Pressure System) is NOT a replacement for checking your tire's pressure. Sad fact, I had a lady with the that TMPS light on and she didn't know what it meant.

LOL, I am probably one of THE worst about tire maintenance. I haven't bought a set of new tires in at least 5 years. I normally get used tires for $25 a pop, and honestly, people throw out some half way decent tires. Actually, I am helping reduce tire waste on a very small scale. I will roll them till their bald or out of balance. Granted, I don't normally ever need to take the hiway though, I live in the middle of the city, almost anything is within walking distance..

you mean.....when some one hits a curb and a buldge forms its good to drive on another 10,000 miles lol...
my wife works in the Walmart tle area oh the stories i hear. atleast i get someone whom went from blackness oil to 3000 mile oil changing nazi.

This actually happened to me the other day while going to school. I ran over a tool box of all things (it popped out of the back of a truck and tools flew everywhere). I imediatly thought I should put my truck up on the lift at school to check for any underbody damage cause I heard a lot of noise. Then I felt my truck start to lean. The worst part was I put my 4ways on and tried to move over to the shoulder but no one would let me threw. So I just cut everyone off.
