Hello all got a 83 2.3l that i'm currently in the process of doing a complete rebuild. was wondering if there was any other way to set the timing without the rear cover:icon_confused:. would get a new cover but i'm runnin on a limited budget. thanks

Limited budget that sounds familiar. You could put something straight across the no. 1 cylinder and measure from it to find TDC.

get #1 on tdc then rotate cam gear until mark is at 4 o'clock. take a string and hold it from the center of the cam gear bolt to the center of the aux shaft bolt. the cam gear mark will be in a straight line with the string. now rotate aux shaft gear until rotary button is pointing at #1 plug wire on the distributor cap. install belt and rotate crank clock wise to make sure belt does not jump a tooth. adjust tension on belt. this will get you close then set base timing with light. hope this helps
