So i just put my engine all back together with my dad and when we got it from the mechanic at my dads work he said it was timed at top dead center. So we got everything back together and the battery was dead. So then we jump it from my dads truck and my truck will start but it was running hard and not staying idleing. Then it started backfireing and got to the point where flames shot out of the carburator? I was told that if the timing belt skipped a tooth on the chain then it wouldn't even run at all so i was thinking it was a timing issue or could it be a vacuum hose thats on wrong? What do ya think?

could be that he didn't get the timing right. if it was off a tooth or 2 it would probably do exactly that. you don't have to take anything apart to check the timing marks. just remove the rubber plug in the timing cover and try to get the mark on the cam gear lined up with it's mark and get the crank lined up with it's mark on the timing belt cover. you'll know if it's off.

if it got a distributor it could be off a little check it too so youdont have to tear the front of the motor off for nothin

ya i'm gonna look into it more tomorrow afternoon/evening. Hoping to get it figured out. If i do any advice on getting the engine broken in the right way?

i let mine run for an hour at 2500rpm with cheap oil... drain it... put some good oil in it then drive it like i stole it... but most people frown on that.. but the way i look at the hour your rings set in if it goes after that you did somethin wrong... put together a 357 with my buddy for his drag mustang... let it run for an hour at 2500rpm turned it off took it to the track shifted at 8200 and that was 4 years ago still runnin strong

ya we got it figured out turns out we got the wrong intake manifold gasket so we had a huge vacuum leak. But now i'm concerned that i may have vacuum advance issues gotta check it out and see whats up.
