Timing help needed

I recently purchased a '94 ranger, 2.3 manual trans. I got the truck with a broken timing belt. I replaced the belt, tensioner, and cam position sensor. I aligned the sensor with the arrow on the tool pointing to the indent on the sensor. When I put a timing gun on it it shows about 22 btdc with the spout plug disconnected. I've checked and double checked my marks and they are dead on. I even took the belt off and re-aligned everything for good measure. Anyone know what might be causing this?

the real question is how the engine runs, timing is driven by the crank sensor and injection by the cam sensor, the timing is ran on a curve in the computer and isn't really adjustable, it is what it is.

It runs well when cold. When warm it runs like crap from maybe 1500-2500 rpm no power. It feels like the timing is being retarded by the ecu. I did have some EGR related codes but I replaced the dpfe and checked the egr valve. Between 1500 and 2500 rpm the check engine light is on from 2-4th gear. In 5th gear it is on all of the time.

I went back to the timing issue since it seems like a valid possibility for my problem.

You say the check eng light comes on, what codes do you get now? With the light going on and off while driving it could be an o2 sensor or the wrong egr valve. We need to know the present codes.
