Timing check?

Hey guys I have a 98 ranger 4wd with the 3.0. I was driving it home the other day and it just died on me. It will crank up and idle really rough for a little while and die. Also, if you try to give it any gas it dies. Fuel pressure is good. Also, there are no apparent vacuum leaks and engine pulls a pretty good vacuum for the few seconds it actually runs well at first start up. There is no CEL.

I guess the next thing to check is the cam timing. What is the easiest way to do this? Manual says to pull the timing cover off and check the marks on the sprockets you have to pull the engine. Is there an easier way?

Thanks all

unfortunately this engine is not adjustable on the timing since it's distributor less. if timing if off or out of wack, its either due to worn or damaged parts or faulty electronics. You could check the coil pack to make sure its working properly on all 6 cylinders or check that all injectors are opening and not sticking- it kinda sounds like you engine is flooding out but its hard to tell just reading something online.

Try unplugging your mass air flow sensor and see if it changes if so theirs your trouble i had a MAF go out on a 99 and it would do a similar thing
