When replacing the timing chain on an 89 BII, 2.9 engine do you need to remove the water pump to remove the timing chain cover???

Why are you replacing the timing chain? I never heard of one going bad? lol.

lol......u know ur right, ive had rangers with 300k miles on the 2.9 with the original timing chain lol

Since the water pump is ENTIRELY bolted to the timing cover
with 6mm Bolts (10mm heads) technically no.

It's like to you need to take your belt out of your pants to
take your pants off, or your keys out of your pocket to
remove your jacket? No.

I'd also question the need to replace the timing chain.

I've personally run three 2.9's into the ground...
literally to the point where they no longer had sufficient
compression to start reliably... they were all "retired" with
functioning timing chains.

The 2.9 timing chain has a spring loaded tensioner.

Sorry about letting this go so long.

I bought this BII as the body was better than my old one. The guy I bought it from said it threw the timing chain. SO I took it apart only to find that it looks like new. SO that's not it. While I'm in there I like to make sure the timing is set correctly. Are there marks on the gears so I can check this before putting it back together? A photo would be great.

Now after I put it back together I'll try to start it, something I didn't do before I tore it down (Dumb I know). Then see what I have to do.

Thanks...
