I have a strange noise at idle, and at first I thought it could be my water pump. After running the engine with the serpenine belt off, the water pump and any other pulley in that system was quickly ruled out.

Then I thought it was my camshaft pulley, but now I'm not to sure if it's that or the timing belt tensioner? I can't really put anything up against either because they both spin.

I sprayed some "PB Blaster" on the tensioner about a week ago, when the noise was'nt that continuous and ever since then the noise was worse. It's pretty consistent now, and pretty loud. I was hoping it was'nt a cam bearing, but if it was would'nt it be making noise all the time regardless of rpm's?

Anything above idle is good, and sometimes upon startup I hear the dreaded screech sound of a bearing. Yes, a bearing not a belt squeel. Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK, well I just replaced the timing belt and the tensioner. NAPA has the factory tensioner there for $40 bucks.

I'm just waiting for my harmonic balancer to heat up so I can throw it on and start the Ranger back up. I'll keep you posted.

Mine had a squeak in it too...fortunately I had a spare from another engine...they can squeak, that's for sure...and I'm not sure that any spray-on stuff would be good for them since they are sealed and supposed to be greased for the lifetime of the part...

Hope that was your noise...

Well it did quiet it down some but the noise was still there. I sprayed some "PB Blaster" on the oil pump pulley and it started going away. I sprayed a little more on it and it's almost totally gone now. If you did'nt know what to listen for you would never know.....haha.

I think my oil pump is going out dude!

If you remember, I posted about how my oil pump housing has a leak. It's leaking from a hairline crack that's actually in the metal and it's seeping out when the truck's running.

Man I hope it holds out until I can afford one. Thanks
