Is this really necessary every 60,000 miles? How much trouble is it to change?

Yes it's really necessary. I have always done it at the recommended intervals and changed the water pump at the same time. Changing a timing belt on a 2.3/2.5 is an easy job. You can get kits from some auto parts places with a timing belt, tensioner and water pump for around 100 dollars.

a '98 has a round tooth belt, those are 100k belts.

yeah, while you have the front end apart, water pump and thermostat are a good idea... and radiator hoses if they are looking worn

Good solid advice on the hosesWeak hoses will cost you some serious headaches and repairs if you leave them too long.
