Good morning all...question concerning removing the crankshhaft pulley on a 1996 Ranger. How? Ok, I know that if you remove the bolt, then it should slide right off...well, basic principle that it. Yesterday, I pulled everything off the engine to change the timing belt, and was down to the crankshaft pulley and could not get it off. The slide hammer is of no use, and I even tried a three prong 5 ton puller, no success. I would assume that this thing is seized up on the crank...any thoughts??? I did soak both the front and back sides of the crank pulley with WD-40 in the event that heat, vibration and WD would finally get it to break loose. I figure at this point I have about 10K left on the timing belt, so changing it now for me I consider a must. I tend to like my rides running...maybe it's just me... :headbang:

Secondly, I have developed a intermittent air leak, ticking sound. I am at this point looking towards the intake gasket letting go. Under load, it speeds up, and occasionally you get a chirp from it. During this point, I am also replacing plugs, wires, timing belt, serpentine belt, etc. Your average tune up stuff. Gotta love it.
 
If that fails use a torch and hammer with caution!!!!!
 
3 prong puller as in external jaws that pull on the outside? ouch.. major damage.

i take the crank bolt and screw it in only a couple threads and take 2 bolts out of the hub (holds the pulley on) and screw a puller into that, then turn the puller down on the crank bolt... works everytime.
 
I wish people would learn that WD-40 isn't a penetrant. Try PB-Blaster or Liquid Wrench.
 
your trying to get the timing belt off? dont they make a chain wrench that you use to do that?
 
no, the only way to do it is with the CORRECT puller. you absolutely cannot pull on the outside of the pulley
 
Thanks guys for the feedback. Yeah...I know that WD is not a penetrant, however, at the time I was out of PB. As it normally works out...:icon_rofl: Going back to the three prong puller, absolutely...major carnage...the pulley is cast, so I stopped short of breaking it.

Going back to the tick...I had heard via a reputable source that once in a while when an intake gasket starts to leak, there may be a ticking sound. My source had this happen to him on two different used Rangers. In my case, the sudden pop sound and sudden loss of a cylinder pointed me to one of the four plugs on the drivers side of the engine that I had not changed...as I was waiting for the intake gasket kit to arrive at Autozone. No damage to the head, however, the plug was in two pieces. During the changing of the final four plugs and after looking at all eight of them, I did notice that there were 3 brands of plugs used. :icon_confused: Hmmm...what a concept.
