It's been a while for me, probably fifteen years since I messed with a 2.8. Once you've durasparked, don't you just disconnect the vacuum advance hose and set it to 10-12 BTDC at warm idle?

Do you have a ported vacuum on the carb? I just put a 8.5hg power valve in my carb and it made a big difference. Preset the idle air needles 3 1/2 turns out from lightly seated the 2.8 runs alot better on the rich side at idle speed it also supplements the intermediate circuit. With the vacuum advance disconnected set the base timing at 10 dbtdc. Then you can dial in the carb. Turn the needle in slowly until rpm just begins to drop and then back out 1 full turn.
