I did a seafoam treatment cleaning through the brake booster line and got a hell of a smoke show, accidentally sucked most of the can. The problem is later I noticed an oily residue leaking through the bottom of the cat. I'm assuming it was the dirty seafoam emptying out. This I imagine is not a good sign and I assume indicates I have a leak in my cat?
If my cat is rusted out would that not mean that every cat from every other 96 ranger is pretty much done for? Or did I just get a crappy one?

metal rusts slower/faster depending on the elements its exposed to. But if anything it coming out of it, that's a sure sign of a leak.

i've got a better question. if you put liquid seafoam in the intake how did liquid seafoam make it to your cat. i would think that it would be burnt up in the combustion chamber and go out with the exhaust

It stalled out

The engine stalled and when I tried starting it a few minutes later it still wouldn't start so I guess some of the seafoam got pushed out the exhaust unburned. After about 10 minutes I tried again and now it started.
I changed my oil right after because I sucked so much seafoam I figured a fair amount must have leaked past my piston rings.

Hello all ,
On the same note as the CAT. I have a 97 2.3 with about a 1 year old muffler system from the cat back but have been noticing a sound from mine . I blocked the tail pipe and sure enough I have a cat leaking but with that darn heat sheild I cant seem to see it well . Can I take off the front pipe at the manafold and braze this crack or can I get a aftermarket cat and cut off the old one and replace it . Or can I just run a straight pipe to the muffler ??

Thanks

Leaky in Michigan.

just get a new cat. brazing wont hold. and straight pipe is illegal and will make your truck sound like poopy

Just leave it be unless the noise is bothersome

I just decided to leave mine because I found out it wont effect mileage/hp anyway since the leak is after the first 02 sensor, in a way it' a high flow exhaust lol a whole 1/2hp gain
I guess unless the noise is an issue but I got a cherry bomb on mine anyway.

i've seen them plug and not turn on a cel and melt alot of stuff under the car cuz they will glow red when plugged

Nobody wants a plugged cat. plugged cat is definatly when you got to change it. I once was worried that I might have one before I knew there was a leak so all I did was take out the first o2 senser out and check the pressure of the exhaust which was nothing in my case

same happened to me i have a 1996 but i replaced it you can get a new aftermarket one but they cost a shit ton. what i ended up doin is cuttin a cat out of a 01 ranger and cut out mine out the 96 and put the 01 cat in. its illegal for a shop to do it but i know the guy and he did it for me.
