TIL: Today I Learned...

Today I learned that catolog descriptions can be quite inaccurate. One of the small parts Im needing on my 8N tractor is this special bolt that goes between the lift linkage on the 3-point top plate to the lower lift arms. it also has a tab for the “check chain”- which keeps the lift arms from getting into the tires. Its 5/8” diameter. Mine are so bad that they are wore to 1/2” at least. So I ordered a set, its called “eyelet assembly, check chain”. doesn’t come with nuts but does say it takes 1/2”, so they come in, I can see its fine thread. My next trip into town I stop by tsc & get a pair of 1/2-20 nylon lock nuts. I get home & try them. too small!, I go over to my box trailer & swipe a lugnut, knowing those are 1/2-20. the new nuts fit so it aint the wrong nut for what I was searching for. I grab 2 wrenches from the tool box. the 1/2 wont go over the threads but the 9/16 does, what the hell?! 9/16 fine thread? Ive never heard of a 9/16 bolt/nut. Guess I take one of these new parts into rural king on my next trip to town, they have a better hardware section, if 9/16-xx exists, then they probably have it. If they are going to make things weird then why don’t they include the nut?!

Edit: if I cant find a 9/16-xx I will see if I can source a 5/8-3” bolt & weld a washer to it for chain attachment.

my tap chart shows 9/16-12 coarse, 9/16-18 fine thread.
9/16 is seldom, if ever, used on new stuff.
they do exist, try an industrial supplier.

Amazon.com : 9/16 inch hex nut

edit: check some ball joints for that size nut, you might get lucky.

second edit: is it a 14mm 1.5 pitch? or a 1.25 pitch?
14mm is very close to 9/16", but the pitches are all different.

On an 8N, I would never, ever expect metric threads on OEM parts. I'm not tractor expert. But, back when 8Ns were manufactured, US manufacturers weren't doing much with metric parts.

this is a replacement part, the original was sae.
“land of almost right” (china) strikes again!

9/16” exists and I’ve used it before, but it’s not a very common size anymore.

McMaster-Carr has a huge selection of hardware and really fast shipping with decent prices. I just got another hardware order from them for stuff I needed and stuff to fill in empty slots in the hardware collection I maintain at home. Usually it’s RK or them to stock my hardware, lol.

I have noticed on my TO-20 tractor (very similar to yours), all of the original hardware seems to be fine thread. And everything is SAE with the oddball 11/16” wrench being widely used.

9/16-18 is the size, took her to bob evans for breakfast and (coincidentally?) rural king is right there nearby. Under $1.00 for 2 nut’s & lock washers. Least Ive ever spent there.

Only place I've ran into 9/16" bolts is leaf spring eye bolts...

Last weekend I learned bad things can happen if you jump in a vehicle to move it while you still have your 3M work tunes on and of course make a hot lap around the yard to charge the battery a bit then park to jump back on the mower/tractor... there was apparently a 5 gallon jug of diesel in the back of the explorer, about 2 gallons of it spilled in the rear floor... that's gonna smell great for a while... conveniently it squats in the back so a fair amount leaked out onto the rear bumper though.
