when i get the RPMs up like 3 -4000 like accelerating on up a hill or on the interstate it beggins to ticks heavy until i shift or let off the throttle. it dont last long but its pretty loud. the motor ticks a little all the time but it gets really bad under those conditions. so.... pinging or valve ticking?

155k on it. no leaks, no nothing. i got this truck from a 74 year old man that bought it brand new in 2000.

It sounds to me like a very typical case of pinging. I'd start by running some decent de carbonizer (sea-foam or BG make good ones). It will help to eliminate carbon buildup in the combustion chambers that causes the pre-ignition. Since pinging is relativley cheap to treat, try to eliminate it first. If you treat it for pinging, and the problem doesn't get any better, then you know that you've got a more serious issue.
