i have a 94 ranger 4.0 4x4 auto. ive been trying to figure out whats cause the engine noise. i thought it the engine was shot so i was just gona drive it till it quit.( it was knocking bad u could here it a block away lol) well that was awhile a go. so i actulay try figureing out whats going on. i thought the nocking was comming from rods, cause u cant here the nosie from under the hood, so i crawled under the truck and its not comming from the rods. if u slide back to the catalatic converter{hollowed out} u can here the knocking nosie. u can only here the sound out of the exuast? the truck sputters really bad at idle but runs fine if it aint idleing. sometimes it seems powerless when u tke off too. i changed plugs, wires, filter fuel filter. ive never herd what spark knock. could this be what the noise is? it sounds like a giant exuast leak or a lound lifter but its not.

Hey dude,
Looks to me like I have the same truck. Mine is running 120K miles. It had a bunch of issues with it when I bought it a few months ago. I also changed the plugs, wires, air filter, O2 sensors, and cut the exhaust off (which was then rewelding on with a flowmaster 40). The problem was actually a dirty Mass Airflow Sensor, MAF, but it looked clean.

The power: Clean and/or check your Mass Air Flow Sensor yet? It is located about 6-8 inches past your air box towards your intake manifold. Even if it looks clean, clean it with MAF cleaner from O'Reillys or Autozone, $3. (It may also be your O2 sensors since it looks like you have not changed them yet...)

Knocking: Does it knock all the time? Try put in some thicker oil or Valvoline Max Life, also run 91 octane for a few tanks and see if it goes away.

Don't know if this will help, but it is a start!

Gat.
