got an 89 ranger with the 2.9 and on occasion when i start and run it makes this constant ticking noise. however after driving for a few minutes it will go away. im thinking its a spark plug or exhaust leak. anyone else have this same problem and know of a cure? thanks

What kind of oil pressure do you have?? and what kind of filter are you running?

start it up after dark...open the hood..if you see fine sparks racing over the plug wires...a new set is in order...or at least see if it is shorting out from a bad boot. which may account for some of the "tic".

Lots of others have the same thing...sometimes it does ....sometimes it won't. most just live with it.
If your oil pressure is within the correct range, that is.

oil pressure looks good but now im sure its a fuel injector

Most likely lifter bleed down one of the 2.9 quirks

even if you have good oil pressure the lifters will tick. i have 45-50 psi in my auto meeter gauge and my 2.9 ticks all the time but goes away after a couple miles. they are verey know for not getting oil to the top of the motor.

I'm betting lifter too. I have the exact same thing right now.

ye that could be it but it really sounds like its coming from an injector. i dunno lol ill just let it be

get a foot of garden hose or some thing close in size and put one end on the valve covers and your ear on the other end, its pretty cool you can here alot of shit. put the one end all over the motor to see were its comein from. while its running. good luck.
