As far as oil additives go, you might try a product called "Seafoam", heard about it from a friend who used it in his motorcycle and worked great. You can add it to the gas and oil, put some in each place in my 74 Fiat Spider and it runs amazingly better. Adding it to the gas gives a good top end lube (cleans injectors and valves, and quiets noisy lifters) and adding it to the oil improves compression and lubrication. My little Spider has noticeably more power and less engine noise now, and I'm not easy on that little 1600cc DOHC...
Try that at your own risk. Suddenly loosening up a bunch of sludge out of the crankcase is a really good way to totally finish off marginal lifters or make them stick.
True, but I think it dissolves the crap rather than knocking it loose, and it sure wouldn't hurt anything to dump a can in the gas tank for injector cleaning and top lube. Definitely a good idea to change the oil more frequently when using any sort of oil additive in an old motor. My Fiat sat for 5 years after being fairly well abused by the previous owners, drove it myself for about a year before putting the Seafoam in about 6 months ago. Maybe I'm just lucky, but it sure runs a heck of a lot better now...
