I have an '03 4.0L 4x4 auto supercab 4dr, i just got it not to long ago. A few days after I got it it developed a thumping or shudder? during take off. it happens everytime I start from a stop or close to it. I took it back and they told me it was an easy fix, it took them 20min. or less and the problem was gone. what they told me they did was pull the driveshaft down and grease the 'spline' (was not aware of anything like that up there but it is my first auto) I thought whatever it is gone I am happy. Well the same thing is happening again and they wont warranty it now and it is not just one thump it is a series of several small thumps like everything is starting to engage somewhere. I have checked my driveshaft for play and have absolutly none I can get with my hands. Does anyone have any suggestions? And does anybody know what they might have greased last time?
Thanks Guys!
Bart

Slip yoke.

Ignore it.

Or install James Duff traction bars to cure the axle wrap.

Or install a one piece drive shaft.

Mine has done that since new.
Never touched it, doesn't bother me.

It's a truck.

Yeah, cause all trucks are supposed to shudder from a stop....

Take the rear driveshaft out, pull it apart at the slip joint, clean out the grease, put in new and, rinse and repeat once a year.

Use a Moly CV joint grease (and don't be stingy, use as much as you can on it).

Chances are good they used the wrong grease (or didn't use enough).

My experience is that when you put a glob on it hoping to fill it full it all slides off when the splines slide together.

I try to fill the boot up with it though.

I slide it apart several times, spreading the grease down into the splines each time. A big glop down inside the yoke won't hurt either.

Ok sounds good, I do have a 1 piece driveshaft now, but if I'm correct you guys are telling me to grease tward the front inside the rubber boot about a foot from the transfer case? While I have this thing down is there other points to grease I can get out of the way. Oh and thank you guys for responding, just ignoring the problem wouldn't be a smart thing to do, something in there is not performing as it should.
Thanks again guys!

Yeah, the slip-spline is inside that boot. Put as much grease on the splines (and inside the yoke) as you can. Black wire ties can be used to resecure the boot if needed (the original metal clamps are basically one-time-use parts). Don't try using hose clamps on it though, that can throw the balance off.

Hope that helps

If you REALLY want to, you can get new keystone clamps and pliers at an auto parts store.

But zip ties do work. Just make sure you cut the excess off, or you'll be making some interesting noises. :D

That, by the way, is a REALLY good way to mess with a buddy's mind! :D

Oh, I'm going to have to look into that, there are hose clampps on it now, probably from the dealership, but I'll get rid of them for sure. Now when you say inside the yoke thats also in there or is that another part? Sorry, don't know much about it.

Thanks
Bart

No, that's all under the same boot.

if there are hose clams on it now just replace them with zip ties.....the hous clamps will destroy the shaft after a while with it spinning out of balance....seen it too many times...
