I took the truck in the first time it did this and they cleaned something. I went in about a year ago and they said they had to replace the whole air sensor and said it was because of using a K+N oil air filter...maybe. That fix was a year ago and 2 months. I have changed to a AFE paper and it is happening again. That new filter is an oil-less one. When it happens turning off the engine works to bring it back, sometimes. Taking off the battery cable seems to work the best. Someone at the Toyota forum told me to try that as it defaults back to the factory setting. Any ideas about this ? I don't want to go back to the dealer since they seem to only want my bucks, I can't keep buying new sensors every year. Thanks For the help....Rich

i'm pretty sure the throttle cables on rangers have to be the same....

but on my dad's old 84 suburban w/ a 6.2l, his throttle started to stick and the engine would race.

to my belief the throttle cable is stranded inside a plastic/rubber guard, if the wire inside is frayed it could cause it to become stuck.

or is it an electric throttle?

It shouldn't start working right after I default the computer if it is mechanical vs electric. It is like the computer is not maintaining the throttle, not a cable. This takes off and goes faster without me giving it gas. If I rev it it won't come down as it usually does.....

clean your throttle body and where you throttle cables attach i have this issue before and this fixed it.

I'm with Rich... All Rangers to my knowlege run throttle cables to the throttle body. Not a drive-by-wire servo type setup. If it was indeed the cable or pivot shaft that was getting hung up, it would still be stuck when he started it back up or unhooked and reconnected the battery. It sounds to me like something electronic is at fault. Maybe the Idle Air Control hanging up or something and not letting the RPMs settle back down to a normal idle speed.

That was something they said, but they put on a new whatever and after a year broken again? It was $ 900 and it should have fixed it...... That's why I am hesitant to go back.........

They told me that the mf ? sensor was not working and they sent to Detroit to get a new one . They (Ford dealership) put it on and it worked well , and aside from the revving up the truck works great. That was what I had taken it in for, this was the second time . The first time they cleaned something. I don't know the specifics more then that sorry....They mentioned that the K+N air filter (oiled) may have fouled the sensor, so I have a AFE Pro Dry oiless now...

I've had continuos problems with the bell crank on my old antique 3.0s. Once a year I have to take it apart and clean and lube it. It is the piece that the throttle cable connects to. I don't know that your has the same thing. The symtoms are the same though.
