Three ?'s about GT40 heads

The 40 bucks I have is also my money for the rest of the month =/.

And I've still not 100% figured out if interference is an issue, I've got no clay, so right now I must resort to the trial and error method. Not the best option, but it's all I got.

Thanks, I got a Haynes manual for the car already because of my dad's Marquis (his is next gen tho but apparently the manual is '88 thru his gen). Always good to have multiple sources tho.

IMHO, I'd use that chart from All Ford Mustangs over a Haynes manual any day. Might be the same info though??

I'd also use the right persons advice from TRS over a Haynes manual any day as well.

True. Right now torque specs arent top of the list in my mind. Or even the bolts. it's just praying it works because I've got little money, my car's broke, my grandmother's car is broke, therefore we have no car between the two of us tog et anything done.

No Bueno. I hope all goes well!!

Did you buy the gasket kit yet?

Yes, gasket kit will be picked up tommorow. Right now I'm praying the GT40's work fine. Or that somehow at least one of my stockers is perfectly fine, so I'd only have to go buy one at PnP then hope that one is functioning.

No job + no money + having to resort to food stamps this year to have enough food + having no vehicle to LOOK for a job, or even to go do my odd jobs that pull in a little money = a sucktastic life.

I miss my Ranger, thing never missed a beat. I miss it so bad it hurts. That may sound like a joke but it's f*ckin true. I love the Vic, just wish I had the money to fix it without having to worry if the parts I could afford will work (IE: the GT40's).

So one of the heads is for sure bad/cracked then? I thought it was just a head gasket rather than a bad head.

I'd bet you could sell those GT40's for at least 125-150 dollars and turn a profit if both of your heads are good.

Well, my friend Dani (who had it before) let the damn thing shut off on her from the heat. I drove it very gingerly back to my house. One head sprayed oil like it had diarhhea. So either the gasket was VERY blown, or the head warped/cracked. I don;t think the other head spewed oil.

Urgency is the issue right now, I've been trying like hell to get a job at Caterpiller (one of the two best places to work around here without going to college, the other being Flower's Bakery) so I can make some money, and put some back so I can afford to go back to school (I made a tough decision after deciding what I was going for would make me want to throw myself off a bridge) AND the state HOPE tuition just had a major cut, so I'll deffinitely need cash. Problem is, caterpillar hires a few tmies a year, through something called Volt, they test applicants, and choose which ones to hire. The next deadline to apply is the end of this week I believe.

This is a bit off topic, but I kinda needed to vent.

We keep running into snags. Like gettin the fuel lines off and reaching the god awful location of the back valve cover bolts. Got the valve covers off. I need to clean them, and I'm gonna paint them while they are off. My engine is also full of dextron, so when everthing is bolted back up I'm gonna flush my cooling system every so often.

Haven't gotten the heads off yet due to the fuel line problem, without removing the fuel lines we'd have to lift the heads and lower intake off as one piece, which would be very annoying.

We are gettin another tool and an awning for shade tommorow, so should get alot more work done. Also gona start earlier. The heat is really killing us. And we will have a cute gopher to fetch us the wrenches and such. Dropping the oil pan is gonna really suck, the K member is the holdup there. My friend has a few pics he snapped on his phone, gonna post it up sometime soon.

Thanks again for being so active in the thread. I'd rep ya again, but it's been too soon. :icon_thumby:

Got the lower intake, fuel rail and injectors, right head, right exhaust manifold off and undid alot of the front accessories and unbolted the left head. Got rained out tho. More work tommorow. My pistons have a round recessed spot in the middle (very little dept tho), so that solves that query.

No worries. I love the 302 and working on them. It's nice to see you reviving this one.

That's interesting. I'd love to see pics if possible. Did you find the casting number in the heads?

Havent looked, the one that is off is being used as a weight to keep my shitty awning from blowing away. Other anchors include the old upper intake, an L shaped lug wrench, and my grandma's Taurus.

Any tips on cleaning off the lower intake and something that will take the black death off the valve covers?

Almost can get the other head off, but someone has to pry back the exhaust manifold so I can reach the last few bolts and my friend had to go help his mom with an errand. It's raining lightly now so if/when the sun comes back out today I'll look for the casting number and take pics of the pistons.

I refuse to give up on this car. I love it in a similar way to how I felt about my Ranger. Different feeling, but equal. Theres no way I'd get rid of it.

I used Simple Green and a Scotch Brite pad (non metal). It worked really slick.
