My credo
I need more sleep.
I'm changing my transmission fluid and filter tomorrow and I decided to change my oil as well. Royal Purple was on sale so I picked some up, and I got a K & N filter too. Has anyone else run Royal Purple? Is it good stuff?

RP is very good stuff and good for at least 7500 miles in most applications. It's pricey though, I would only buy it if it is on sale.
I get used oil analysis done occasionally on all our cars. I never tried RP but the lab results I've got from Pennzoil Platinum, about $25 at Wal-Mart, are as good as oil gets.

Yeah I got it on sale, I figured I'd give it a try.

best stuff there is. I used it on 6 different 900,000+ mile 12.7L series 60 Detroit diesels and with bypass filtration I was able to kick the oil drain interval to 100,000 miles from 20,000.

NOT A FAN.

Put some Royal Purple 80w90 gear oil in a Ranger 5 spd transmission. Had to drop the transmission to replace slave cylinder, so I drained the oil, it come pouring out like water, it sheered that fast. The truck might have had 40k miles on that oil.

I was disappointed, being so expensive, but the RP did give me better MPG and cold winter shifts!

what transmission do you have that you were using 80w-90?

I ran RP 80w-90 in eton/fuller 10, 13, and 18 speed transmissions as well as 80w-90 in both differentials and at 50,000 miles still flowed like gear oil

Well for the transmission I'm sticking with castrol mercon v.

It kinda tastes like grapes, but not sure...

It's just grape juice for your vehicle.
It defiantly sounds like my truck is running a bit better since I put that stuff in. I also changed the trans fluid and filter today, and it made a big difference, now my truck shifts smooth and doesn't lag.

I wouldn't run 80w-90 in an M5od-r1

AFAIK Ranger manual trannys and all late-model Ford manuals call for Mercon ATF (not Mercon V). I usually use Mobil 1 ATF in my t-case and the 5 speed in my son's Mustang although for shits and giggles we put Redline D4 in them the last time. It shifts a little better with the Redline although it doesn't like cold weather but we hardly drive it in the winter anyway. I surfed the Internets a little before I got the Redline and the dudes on the BWM boards swear by it.

The rule for the older manuals is if it doesnt have a bottom removeable pan, atf is the way to go, if there is a removeable metal pan it takes gear oil. The repair manual says up to 87 to use 80w.

I believe it was a Mitsubishi was used back then(they made a 4spd as well), the rest you are clueless, putting gear oil in a M5' is retarded.

My transmission is a 5R55E and the manual said it needs mercon v.
