My friend is picking up a 86 turbo diesel ranger and we wanna swap it into something cause the old truck is done for. Would it be worth putting it into 2nd gen 4x4 ranger say with 4.10s or would it be better in a 98 2wd with 3.73s . . . . .anybody with a diesel Ranger please chime in on proper gearing for it . . . . .dont worry bout lack of parts we have plenty

and lastly should we take pics and post on here :icon_thumby:

Two words. Diesel B2.

Sadly were out of B2s and the last explorer went to the scrap yard a long time ago

We are basicly working with
90 reg cab long bed 4x4 D35 8.8 with 373s 6 inch lift
97 ext cab 4x4 D44 and sterling with 373s 6 inch lift
98 reg cab short bed 2wd lowered in the front with trac loc 8.8 with 373s
or I could buy it from him and put in a 92 reg cab short bed D35 7.5 with 4,10s with a 6inch lift

We could put it in a fullsize but I doubt that poor lil mazda motor would move a F250 or maybe make a messed up looking moon rover dune buggy thing :icon_welder:. . . . . . with stacks strippers and beer :icon_hornsup:

I say... Fix the truck.

Cheaper (possibly) and less of a pita to swap the engine and entire fuel system

is it the old school engine that came factory with the ranger? im running 3.73s in my diesel not factory one. and that is a bit much, i plan on lowering to a 3.55 or a 3.31 also what are the plans? my powerstroke has 4.10s and i barely ever cruise above 70 bc of the gearing

I'm with Dave on this one. 3.73 or 4.10s would be good with a tall tire (35's or 37's). I'm running a 31" tire and plan to change to a 3.08 gear from 3.55s with my 4bt swap. Those old diesels might have less power or spin higher rpms, see what ratio and tire size the '86 has. Work your numbers off that.
