I bought 2 rangers a 84 and a 87 both v6 4x4 5 speed.
I am trying to get the 87 up and running good to give to my father-in-law and this thing has fought me from the start.
The guy I got the 87 from said he thought the throwout bearing was going bad. WRONG. bought the truck and found out the transmission was shot. (gears binding togther).
:damnit1:

So I bought another 5 speed from a kid who had a engine fire and was parting out the truck. ($150) Said it worked great... no issues. I checked it over and all gears engaged good, no binding..etc.
Tore out the old 5 speed (along with everything that is involved getting it out) Clutch and pressureplate was in good shape. Replaced the throwout bearing from the old transmission in to the replacement because it was in near new condition.
Put the replacement transmission in and everything back togther.
I have fought with trying to bleed the clutch all day, and finally got it!
YAY!

oh wait....WTF....I have fluid coming out from inside the bell housing.:annoyed:

Push the clutch pedal a few times....yep......&*^#%%@&!**!!!!!!:pissedoff: :pissedoff:

Now I have to tear everything back apart and replace the slave.

Sorry for the rant.....

Reads like a PITA.

Slave probably wasn't replace with the clutch last time.
I would assume a ford internal slave could last two or maybe 3 clutch changes, but never tried it myself, when clutch is worn out I have always replaced all of the stuff, just because of the labor involved.
External slave, never replaced until it broke, lol.

For ease of mind and to make things easier I'd always replace the master/slave at the same time. Along with the clutch and flywheel unless they have a long way to go.

Yea, I went through this sort of thing with my choptop and F-150. I kind of went through it with my 88 and the 89 Bronco II that I sold, but I knew more of what I was getting into with those.

With my F-150 (which was supposed to be in great shape other than the rear leaf spring hangers - but in the last 5 years since I got it I spent over $5k on it), the clutch went out like 1k miles after I got it.... with supposedly 69k miles on it. I figured it would be a good idea to change the slave while I was in there. 4 months later the NEW slave sprung a leak. Fun times.

Aggravating?!?!?!

I have grabbed the gas can and some matches at different times.....

Then I took a break.......

calmed down.........

fixed something on the other end of the truck......

then----"re-fo-cussed" on the problem that was driving me nuts(sier)!

Yup, that's the other side.
New no longer means "it works"
New now means "never tested"

To keep prices down manufacturers no longer have a "Quality Control" department, they just slap a warranty on it and let the consumer deal with it.

If the $40 part takes 8 hours to remove and reinstall, just getting a "free" exchange doesn't seem very "free", lol.

Auto repair shops get a bad rap for using expensive parts instead of ebay or amazon parts.
The reason they use the parts they do is that for the most part those manufacturers still have Quality Control, so it is less likely that they will have to eat the labor if a new part fails under warranty.

Well I finally had a day to work on the truck.
Fired up the heater in the garage and got to work. It took me 7 hours ..not bad doing this job solo.
To tear everything out, replace the slave and throwout bearing. ($120 at Oreillys).
put it all back togrher and bleed the clutch.
Now to pull the ranger out and put my Dodge ram in there for a Plenum gasket replacement ( Dodge engineering sucks) .
After that get the 84 ranger in there for a engine pull to replace the freeze plugs.

Thanks for the update :icon_thumby:

Let me update this thread a little..lol

got these trucks a year ago and mainly working on the 87 when I can. this truck must hate me...

So far i have fixed the following items on this 87 in the last 8 months or so.

All 3 ( 2 tanks) fuel pumps...2 low pressure in tanks..1 high pressure in frame rail.
and fuel filters.
Shocks
brake rotors
New tires ( $600 ouch)
Transmission
Newer 2.9 v6 ( old one cracked heads and filled engine with coolant)
clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, slave cylinder
waterpump, thermostat
cap,rotor,plugs,wires

and a bunch of reciepts for oddball stuff..

So far I have tossed about $1,800 in this thing...and its still not running LOL!
It died on me today 2 miles from the house after getting the new engine finally running.
I think the TFI went out...will find out tomorrow.

Big thankyou to RonD!!...and all the others on here ...thanks for all the help sorting out the issues with this truck over the last year!

I feel like the only think I haven't worked on or replaced has been the body and frame on this thing....good grief...what a project.

Then I have the 84 waiting its turn still..( facepalm)
I might take a break from the rangers and start on my wife's 66 chevy panel...
