I have a 1988 4x4 super cab xlt 2.9 with auto trany with overdrive im not sure what kind it has right now. and i need to get another one from a junk yard the ???? i have is how would i find out what kind of trany is in my truck and what would be the best trany to put back in it

you have an a4ld. the bad thing is due to electronics it can only come from an 88 or 89 ranger or 88 b2 as a complete bolt in swap. if i remember right you can change the valve body and it would work but not sure on that

That's about where it's at.
I have the same truck, bad automatic, actually it's a gone automatic. I'm going the route of swapping to manual across the board.

I found that the transmission was expensive as rebuilt, fairly expensive to rebuild if you can't do it. 4x4 version fairly hard to find.
This was my 'area' so you may have better luck.
