This just seems odd to me


Looks OK as long as this was AFTER you cleaned the grease off and that's not how they looked when you took it apart. :icon_rofl:
 
the weight is borne by the bottom of the axle stub, that's where you look for wear.

Shouldn't be any wear there since the inner bearing races don't move relative to the spindle.

but they do. I suspect an out of round/balance wheel is what causes the inner race to slowly rotate on the axle.
as the small amount of play is shifted around by the wheel the race slowly walks around.
I've seen wear on Taurus rear stub axles and on my 2005 front spindles.
putting grease on the axle probable doesn't help the matter any, I used to be guilty of that.
