i have an 89 ranger 2.9L, with an a4ld and i broke it today. i found a 97 explorer parts vehicle and i want to put the 5 speed out of it in my truck, is it possible? can i use the pedals, clutch master cylinder etc. out of the explorer? and what should i get a drive shaft out of? i have a 114 WB

I put a 5 speed in mine couldn't keep an A4LD running.Get a M50D if you can first gear is pretty high but they shift nice. There also the same length as a A4LD.What I did was put in a 4.0 when the tranny broke the last time enjoy driving the B2 much more now.The info you need is on the website for the technical.

stop thinking. start doing.

Trans should bolt up, the rest of the swap parts you might have to grab from a truck like yours due to the body style changes.

Go on rockauto.com and open up the master cylinder and slave cylinder listings for both vehicles and see if the parts match up. You'll want to buy them new anyways, but it'll give you an idea if you need all 1989 parts, or you can use 1997 parts. Also check to see what brake light switch they each use, that'll tell you if the pedal sets are also different.

I picked up a 97 Explorer pedal set, thought they would be the same as a 98, when I went to swap them into my 98 Ranger, I found out they changed the brake light switch in 98, had to go back and pull another pedal set, grrr.

The pedals and master wont work. You need pedals from a 1st or 2nd Gen Ranger. Buy a new master, dont reuse the old one. Your stock driveshaft should work, the M5 and A4ld are about the same length.

You also need a new computer.

Replace the slave cyl. while the trans is out.

The clutch will work, if you swap in the flywheel, clutch, block plate and starter. You may have to change the wiring for the starter a little.

You do not need the computer... the computer on the explorer wouldn't work anyway... The truck should run fine without a manual computer. At least my 4.0 5 speed ranger that was originally an auto did. It just threw a trans code or 2...

good friggin luck

i have been on the phone and can't find an m50d for less than 450 bucks within driving distance of se michigan. don't really want to drive 8 hours and spend 100 in gas to get a trans for 200.

i'm putting it in my bronco ii.

I have 2... but both of them happen to have broken tailshaft housings...
