a guy I work with is looking to sell his '72 VW beetle (I think it's a super) and I am seriously thinking about buying it. he only wants 700 for it, but it doesn't run and has an electrical problem (kept killing batteries). I think I could figure out the electrical problem fairly quickly so that should not be a problem. body is supposedly in good shape (been in a garage with a cover on it)

he told me he was gonna go down to his dads house this weekend and make sure it is still there, if so I will make a trip to check it out and possibly be bringing me home a "new" toy!!

I say go for it! I love my VW powered buggy. And the elsctrical issue can probably be traced to the "alternator." Although it isnt actually an alternator, I just cant remeber the proper name for it. But thats what my problem wan and I just had to get it polarized and no more dead batteries.

looking for the word generator, and the best cure for that is swapping in a alternator, not hard nor too expensive to do either, plus those are lots of fun i work on a 1600 race buggy and its so easy to work on those things its stupid

It's called a generator. An altenator makes an alternating current and needs a rectifer and a voltage regulator and the generator makes a dc current and only needs a voltage regulator.
When I was a kid, my uncle gave my brother and I an old VW "bug". We finally got it running, but it wouldn't go over 45 mph. We would drive it to the swimmin' hole with our friends all stuffed in it. So, I guess you could say it was my first car, but it was fun.

yea I miss my old 71 so when he told me about this, I decided I need to see it and will probably get it. as far as the generator goes I already decided I want an alternator instead (I've seen it done) because they are much more reliable.

oh and to answer the question I know someone will ask. NO I am NOT looking to do a resto on it, it will get certain "modifications".
