Thinking about a Jeep

Not after whoever got done with it...

It is a proven fact, as time goes on the jeeps get suckier. My friends all have early yj's, and they suck. They have four cylinders and weenie car transmissions. There were good and bad jeeps made throughout the history of the company, just depends which components you got stuck with. I think the AMC 258 is a damn good motor personally. Mine has been through utter hell and still pumps the torque out pretty good. I would take an inline over a v6 any day, inlines have more low end torque, which is what is really needed if you do any wheeling... v6's are better on the highway simply because they get better mileage usually...

+1 seen a lot of jeeps with straight 6s in my day. And imo (I'll probably get banned for this) the amc 4.0 is the best engine in its class. Powerful, and just about unkillable.
I just about cried when I heard jeep was replacing that engine (rip 4.0. no v6 can every replace you)

The 4.0 Jeep motor is a hell of a motor. I'm no jeep fan at all, but that motor kicks ass. I had a cherokee kill my ass in my younger days racing with my OHV 4.0 ford. But it did last 300K miles before I sold it with no issues, so I guess that counts for something.
But even the jeep motor doesnt compare to anything like the 4.0 ford straight 6. I would love to acquire one :headbang:

that Jeep 4.0L is higher winding that the 2F I6 in my Toyota..... and I wind it out to just over 4 grand to shift (clutch slips and smokes if I shift any lower) I had 2 CJ's. one Cj-5 and one CJ-7, I didn't like either of them (and didn't care for the fact I could break the input shaft on the transmission with that wimpy emission choked 258ci 6cyl). I had a 73 waggy that after I rolled it donated its 400 to a 76 cherokee cheif. the cheif was replaced by a 77 J-10 and it also recieved the 400 that had been put in the cheif. Most recently I had a 96 2 door Cherokee with a 4.0L and It had issues....... appearently the head is too long and likes to warp.

the only reason I would consider the new 4 door wrangler is because it is 4 door and it has a V6 with a 6 spd........ however i don't like the price so I am attracted to the liberty because i can get a 2006 with a 6spd for 13K. 1/2 the price of a used 4 door Wrangler, but right now I am thinking pick up ............. my buisness partner has a 2006 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 4 door with an 8100/ 6spd manual he will sell me for 14K because he bought a new one with a Duramax and his kids don't want a truck........ both his boys are greenies and they want hybrids...... he told them to buy their own and offered his truck to me. so I might buy that if the bank comes through.

As I said in another thread, I will put my Cherokee up against any similarly modded vehicle you can bring. It does a great job off road, gets decent (not great) MPG, drives very good, is very comfortable and has yet to fail me. It is a 91 and has 172,000 miles on it. 4.0 automatic. Only thing I don't like about it is the unibody construction. Makes for a few issues when wheeling, but they can be dealt with. All that being said, I have never been off road in a Ranger 4x4 or BII, but I have seen a few on trails. They are light and maneuverable and seem very capable.

never had any issues with my 92 4.0 jeep cherokee other than 2 water pumps, the electric fan sensor, and the oil filter adapter o ring, tranny mount and motor mounts and a set of u joints...has about 260,000 on it.

org tranny, motor, rear end etc etc.( I did add a large tranny cooler to it, as I had it laying around)

replaced the springs on it at 200,000 as they were pretty well done.(gave me a excuse to lift it)

granted its a daily driver only, but its been realiable as hell in the 10 years that its been in the family.

still has plenty of zip to it, and still get in the 17mpg mixed driving range with 31's and what ever gears that came from the factory.3.42's I want to say.In stock forum it use to get 20ish with mixed and alot of miles ago.

No, i like the inlines, maybe you didn't see that... It is the 4 cylinders and v6's I don't like.
