real hard to get a manual gearbox and priced out of my price range. even the wrangler unlimited base 4x4 is more that we can afford at just shy of 27,000.

looked at a used 2006 Liberty with a 6speed manual gear box and (gasp) a floor mounted shifter for the 4wd with 35,000 miles for 13,000........ thats more affordable. and you guys are missing part of the point, Teffie needs something that can go in the snow, not off road, we have the LandCruiser for that. and a manual gearbox and manual shifted 4wd for me is non-negotiable.

I just cruised 287 explorers from 1997 to 2005 on autotrader.com (with in 200 miles of me) and only one 5 speed in the bunch........ sorry guys it will not be an explorer that replaces the mini van and an H3 is way out of budget considering I just picked up 2 more tractors and 6 trailers....... brings me up to 9 tractors and 14 trailers (9 flat beds, 2 with side kits and 7 connestogas, one 48' double drop RGN, and 4 dry vans) now I need 2 more flat bedders ...... anybody with a Class A CDL and a clean MVR want to relocate?

the last year for the tough, no nonsense, git-r-done C J was 1986. all steel, metal inside you could leave it out open in a rain storm and not worry if anything ruined inside.

Except seats and that awesome speedo that would rust internally. Along with a few other bits that were not all that corrosion resistant. Of course, the outside of the truck wasn't any better so I guess you are right. It didn't matter if you left the top off in a storm. :D

i think the jk is the first crap jeep.up until the tj they were designed by americans.now that the germans own chrysler we have these ugly huge 4 door wranglers.nobody makes a tough little git around rig for ranches anymore

Actually they sold Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep a year or two ago to an American company.

I sat in a new Jeep at a car show, I would take one. The manual transmission went thru the gears nice (sitting there), loved the manual 4x4 lever and rubber carpeting... everything just made it look like it would be a fun vehicle to own. It still has solid axles as well (D44's I believe??), and the Rubicon has lockers to boot... it would be a hard out-of-the-box package to beat.

The only thing the BII has over a Jeep of any year is initial purchase price because they don't have nearly the demand, after that about anything you can do to the BII you can do to the Jeep for equal or less $$.

the new 4 door looks fantastic with a soft top and half doors - none of this hard top full steel doors garbage that most of the dealers have

i'll take one in a year or two, slap a budget boost on it, lock it up and wheel the piss out of it and still drive it to the grocery store

They're already locked with E-lockers front and rear with D44's.

I looked at one at the Chrysler dealership while I was waiting for a hood latch for the 'Bring.

4:1 low range, locked front and rear with electronic sway bar disco's. 32" BFG mud terrains. Sounds like it'll drive up over and past everything except Sunoco.

only on the rubicon. that'll run you 35k to start IIRC. not that the base model is cheap by any means

if I ever decided to bring home I jeep I'd perfer an older Army used and abused model, something right out of MASH, well maybe something a little newer, but not a four door.

I would prefer the economy of the V-6 (and better powerband) for long extended wheeling trips though.

A friend of mine has a Liberty CRD with a 3 inch lift and E-lockers. Surprisingly, that little thing is as unstoppable as a daily driven off roader can be. No breakdowns, no problems at all. Plus that Mercedes Common Rail Diesel is a thing of beauty.

Car parts? I think not...:icon_hornsup:

Not after whoever got done with it...

It is a proven fact, as time goes on the jeeps get suckier. My friends all have early yj's, and they suck. They have four cylinders and weenie car transmissions. There were good and bad jeeps made throughout the history of the company, just depends which components you got stuck with. I think the AMC 258 is a damn good motor personally. Mine has been through utter hell and still pumps the torque out pretty good. I would take an inline over a v6 any day, inlines have more low end torque, which is what is really needed if you do any wheeling... v6's are better on the highway simply because they get better mileage usually...
