I have a cheap-o Scoche 220watt RMS 550watt Peak amp that I've been using to power my Infinty Reference series 12"...well I think the amp mighta crapped out.

Went to work this morning and noticed that my sub wasn't hitting like it should, was very very quiet. Left work, and it didn't work at all. Checked the fuses on the side, both were blown. So I replaced them, and it still doesn't work, but the "thermal" light on it comes on.

Scoche built some king of "thermal protection" circuit into it, but it trips that light everytime something goes wrong, so it could be anything. It kicks itself into "protection" mode at the first hint of trouble as I understand it.

Anyone think the thing just gave out?

I always like to do a quick verification test. I would suggest that you see if the light remains on simply hooked to a battery charger.

Could be anything from a short in the speak wire to a bad ground. And it's not uncommon for me to rip one apart and look for carnage. I've fixed 3 out of like 7 that just needed a simple component or some other kind of "fix." But keep in mind that doing electrical work on something as such can be prone to electrical fire.

I've blown a couple myself from running 2ohm on a 4ohm stable amp.. Gets hot, eventually grenades the "expensive to replace" transistors. A friend of mine did something similar, but with much more watts, and almost caught his trunk on fire. But he loved to play with different speaker combinations, never paying any attention to ohms. It's fun to talk with him about different configurations and the aftermath.

I unhooked the amp from everything, so all it had was a hot wire, ground, and remote.....same concept as the battery charger (inline fuse on the hot wire is good, also). No dice, unfortunately.

Ground looks good too, and after having a chat with some local audio gurus.... I think it just gave out. I did beat the piss out of that poor amp, though. Probably lucky it lasted this long, haha.

So, its time to up the wattage! Co-worker of mine has a pioneer amp that he doesn't need anymore, gonna drop by his place soon and check it out. If its what he says it is, probably be a good catch.

Ok, yes, double post, I know.

Anyone know anything about the Pioneer GM-A5040 amps? Its a 4 channel w/selectable 2/4 channel input, 50w continuous per channel, bridgeable.

Just from the power ratings, I'm guessing it's meant to power door speakers, full ranges and the like?
