Hey guys! I have a 2000 XLT 3.0 V6 5 speed ranger. I want to 5.0 swap it. I am very likely purchasing a 1999 mountaineer, is this a good year? What do I need to look out for? I want to keep my truck manual, and I want to use a T5 so it drives nice like a mustang. Since the explorer isn’t manual, I am gonna have to splice the NSS safety switch correct? How do I do that? And also I assume I need mustang clutch and flywheel and things of the sort. Thank you! Any advice is helpful

'99 Mountianeer engine into '00 Ranger is one of the best/easiest combinations.

The one piece we are missing is: 2 or 4wd? (I could assume from wanting the T5, it is 2wd but there are 4wd T5s)

Ranger uses a hydraulic slave cylinder for clutch release, Mustang uses cable...so, most people rig up an external slave for the ex-Mustang bell housing/clutch.

The Mustang T5 puts the shifter slightly behind the front edge of a 60/40 split seat (with the seat all the way back. The "historic" solution was to get an S-10 T5 and pull the rear housing off...which puts the shifter more/less in correct position.

You will need to remove the "automatic" features from the ECU, otherwise you will get a "check engine" light.
You should wire the NSS switch into the clutch, so you have to depress the clutch to start. Embarrassing to dangerous to have the engine start in gear without needing to depress the clutch.

Thank you very much! I seriously appreciate it. Sorry for not specifying, 2WD t5.

For the tail shaft of an S10 trans, could I heat and bend the shifter of the T5 as to not have to buy that part? I’m very comfortable with Jerry rigging.

Any tips for setting up the external slave?

I already have a CEL from O2 sensors, but I’d like to engineer the swap to need the clutch engaged to start.

Don't know if you can bend it that far.

Not a good place to be cheap. Buy the right part or live with the new shifter location. if the latter either modify the seat to clear or switch to buckets.

Only decent welding solution would be to rig up some form of remote shifter. Basically a forward shifter in the cab that would connect to the transmission shifter through linkages. Takes a lot of work to make something that functions properly and it will have the components interfering with the seat.
