Is it possible to put a thermostat in upside down and if so what symtoms would it cause? Thanks for any help

The engine will possibly overheat and blow coolant out the overflow. If the thermostat is put in upside down... it cannot open and let coolant flow through the engine.

thermostat

I do have the probloem of my overflow keeps filling up and i have to drain it and put it back in my rad. I did change the thermo but not sure if i put it in the right wayand when i squeeze my top hose it is real hard but hot. Do you know which way it goes in the spring part towards the block ot towards the housing? Thanks

The spring goes down. The little "pill" goes down into the engine coolant. Like in this illustration:
