Thermostat Myth

The best reason to always run a thermostat is because of the wear. Got this chart out of the How to Rebuild a SBF. They've been running thermostats long before computers.

That is a huge difference in wear. Some industrial engines I work on have a thermostat on each individual cylinder. Now I know why.

Yes. Really it is an emissions control device. They just didn't realize it when nobody cared, but they were doing good. By letting the engine warm up as quickly as possible, the thermostat reduces engine wear, deposits and emissions.

Well with that logic, by the time you ripped all the emissions stuff off of any engine... you wouldn't have an engine.

The same could be said for an oil filter, air filter...

Exactly. All these have evolved. I can remember, before the day of computer controlled powertrains, you would have been considered crazy for running a 195 degree t-stat in the Oklahoma summer. A motor that hit 225 degrees was thought to be borderline overheating. Now these are commonplace. It is the evolution of things brought on by emissions control.

Rationalize it however it makes you happy youngster
