Thermostat & Housing

My housing was leaking coolant, actually seeping because the metal was so thin. So I bought a new housing. With the housing I got a new thermostat(192f).

I used a re-usable gasket. Then the engine ran cooler still in operating temperature but barely. Thought it could have been the thermostat.

So I got a Motorcraft therm (192f) and used right stuff permatex. Same result.

Do you have to use a paper gasket for the therm to work right?

I've had this thing apart now 6 times for various reasons. I don't want to try a paper gasket just to find out the original one was just really hot like 196?:icon_confused:
 
You need the O-ring that goes around the thermostat. Is that present?
 
I always use a paper gasket with the housing...never had a leak with them.

These engines do tend to run cool and that is actually a good thing...the heads are prone to cracking and overheating is one of the primary causes...

A good cooling system that is well maintained is a necessity...not a luxury...

Mine runs cool but I still get good heat in the winter...so if you are not getting heat in the cab it's either a slow leak as you've experienced or the coolant is mixed too strong...or, of course, your truck doesn't have time to warm up properly...which is only about five to seven minutes...

Yes sir. All 3 thermostats have the o ring.

Good to know. I get plenty of heat in the cab actually. I think.
( I guess it maybe hard to tell being we skipped over spring.) By what you're saying I'm now reluctant to mess with it, with super hot summer possibly on the horizon.

I never checked the coolant, I'll do that ASAP. I do let it warm up. I normally drive it 30 minutes or more. My only worries are fuel mileage and engine oil.
 
Wishful thinking

It was was wishful thinking. Drove it an hour yesterday in 30 degree weather and never got to operating temp. Popping the hood once again...
