I know that this has been asked a 100 times before, but it always becomes a "V8 who cares about gas mileage thread". I'd like to see your combination in as much detail as possible (weight, tires, gearing, manual trans, auto trans, 2wd, 4wd, efi, carb, intake, cam, etc, you get the idea). I plan on putting a 302 w/5 speed in a 87 ranger regular cab, short bed that I just bought without an engine or trans (it had a manual trans). The 88 supercab I have now when I have to pull a small trailer the 2.3, 5 speed leaves alot to be desired as far as pulling goes, (especially up hills). I'd like to see what kind of gas mileage your getting when your not pulling or carrying anything while driving in town, and on the hwy.

I'd expect somewhere between 12-16mpg with the 302. Which isn't bad, I have a cousin with a 95 stang 5.0 and says he's getting about 14 on it. Throw in a k&n air filter, should boost mileage a bit.

i have a 83 5.0 ranger 89 Lincoln mark 7 motor with edelbrock carb 4x4 stock motor 30 inch tires 3 speed auto that was stock in the truck and only getting 9 mpg but thats probably because the way i drive it

89 ext cab, explorer 302 with a carb (Ford A321 topped with a Holley 570SA) Toploader 4 speed, 3.73 rear with 275/60/15 tires (28" tall) it gets around 15 mpg. No towing large trailers for more than 10 miles without overheating issues. Can't say for small ones in hills, no hills around here. Cooling system will be your biggest worry as it's hard to get a radiator big enough without core suport surgery for a V8 in an 87. And in San Antone, you're going to need all the cooling capacity you can get with the summer heat, the traffic and the hill country.

My Ranger is lucky to get 8mpg on a good day. I have a 302 BII with a mostly stock engine, C4 and stock everything else and can pull mid 20s if I keep it under 60mph.

driving in the sand i get about 4-6mpg most dirt driving is around 8-10 and 12-14 on the freeway.

Specs are in my sig. It gets roughly 12-13 mpg. That ginormous Holley doesn't help. I'm looking for a smaller Holley or Edelbrock carb for it.

Remove the secondary linkage rod and you'll have a Holley 500 2 bbl. That's a start. I love the 570 SA I put on mine. Took me 6 months or more to find one for what I wanted to pay though ($100-150) Got it on ebay. Didn't even need a kit for it.:icon_thumby:
