I'm a self taught mechanic. I've been doing this since I got my first car and I'll probably never stop. Couldn't if I wanted to.
My project now is an 84 ranger 2.8. Right now I just want it to run good enough to go to Colorado, about 700 miles from here.

Welcome to TRS :)

Have a look here AND Bookmark this page: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/index.shtml

It the Tech Library with articles and info on Rangers

2.8l V6 was a good engine but did have its little issues
It was the last Carbed V6 engine, for Rangers and I think for Ford in general
It had a small computer for carburetor and TFI spark trimming
Many change to manual carb and Duraspark distributor with HEI spark module for more reliability and available parts.
TFI spark system was fine until it got 20 years old, then it seems to be one issue after another unless whole system is replaced
And why replace a marginal system again.
Duraspark distributor and HEI combo will be much more reliable, and cheaper
