Hello, my name is Landon and after helplessly searching threw multiple threads I decided to just suck it up and ask for some help.

I recently just bought an 86 2.9 ranger that didn't start when I got it. I don't know that much about vehicles and working on them but I'm trying to learn. I don't know anyone that really knows much about them that will help me so I figured you guys would be my best bet!

So here is what I have done so far: new plugs, new plug wires, new distributor cap, new fuel regulator, new fuel filter, checked what ground wires I could find and cleaned them, and also retimed the truck.

The truck will fire up with a shot of starter fluid but then die right after.

I have good fuel pressure in the fuel rail but I think the injectors are not firing.
I did the NOID light test but had no luck at getting the light to come on.

My question is what should I check next?
Thanks.

Have you checked the wiring to the injectors? If the light doesn't come on on any of the injectors then I'd suspect a ground.

I tried finding the wiring diagrams on the site but since they changed the configuration I can't find anything. However, if memory serves me correctly, the injectors receive 12v from somewhere (probably the fuse box) so you should have 12v on one of the injector wires, the other wire goes to the computer which grounds it at the correct time to complete the circuit. I'm sure someone else will come in and either confirm this or at least know where to find the diagrams.

I checked the ground from the frame to the exhaust, the one right behind the computer, I found one by the air box over the fender well. Where are more places to look? I figured there would be a few more.

And a wire diagram would be helpful, but I don't really know how to read one.

How do I check the wires to the injectors for 12v?

Computer is bad. Check the initial switch on the passenger floor board on the firewall in the cab. If that doesn't work the computer is bad.

I'm sorry. Ignore my last post. What you want to be looking at is the wiring circled in red in the diagram below. If that's good then NEVERDONE86 is right.

I'd just pull the ECU loose and run a continuity test on them. Straight from ECU to injectors..

SenorNoob, you are speaking Spanish to me brotha! Lol I am still new to this stuff!

Ok so I checked out the diagram and I think I found that the EGR solenoid had a wire lose, but about running a continuity test... I have no clue what that means?

And thanks for y'all's help btw guys.

Lol, sorry bout that. I use one of these to do a test like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter There are other ways though. If you have the wiring disconnected from the computer, the battery, AND the injectors you could just see if a current passes thru it. Connect one side of a wire to the battery and the other to a 12v bulb. If the bulb lights the wire is good. But, I'll say it sounds like you might be in over your head..

Basically if those wires are good and you have pressure at the fuel rail then my next suspect would be the computer.

A continuity test just tell you if the wire is broken somewhere that you can't see. The battery to bulb would do the same thing..

Ok so after more digging I have found 3 wires that are not running to anything, I've looked at the wiring diagram in my book (still learning how to read a diagram) and I can't seem to figure out where any of the actually run to.
From what i can see that the diagram says, the orange is suppose to be ground, and the yellow is hot at all times?
Still not sure about the black wire coming off of the starter solenoid tho.

I am still trying to figure out how to load pictures on here. Once I do I'll show y'all what I'm talking about.

This is the yellow wire I have no clue where it runs to

That yellow wire looks like the one for power to the fuel pump relay.

Also, is the one going to the solenoid coming from the battery side of it?
