The Lone Ranger – Kage’s ’94 X-Cab Leaf SAS and Bed Bob

way to sound like a complete asshole

uhmmmm..... NMB2 is prolly one of the nicest/helpful dudes on here....:icon_confused:

He helped me out big time with my power steering.

I think he was just telling Kage to not waste his time or money on 1330's, because, well, they suck. Doesn't sound assholeish to me...:dunno:

lol i laughed at that one...seriously he added tech not bullshit

im anxious to see the box back on here.

and i know the detailed work get's tiring but that is the difference between good and great....Keep up the great work and keep pluggin away you have a SWEET build here.

Thanks! I should have the box back in a week or two. Once I have it, I can start tying up all the loose ends back there. I'm afraid to do too much at this point as I've got a feeling that I'm giong to have to modify the frame some to make the box sit level. Time will tell.

And I hear you on the detail work. That crap is taking forever, but I know I'll be pissed at myself if I start short changing stuff now. I don't know when I'll have the opportunity in the future to build another vehicle "right" so I'm trying to do everything with longevity in mind. Which, of course, slows things down from time to time.

We'll get there!

1330 joints are trash. 1310's or 1350's are the only way to go.....
I agree competely on this. And with the postivies of the 1310's (Operating angles, availability, strength, etc) they tend to make a good joint in my book.
... But I have alot more power and bigger tires than you. You will be fine with 1310's.
For the past four years I've been I've been beating the tar our of the 1310's in the Jeep (Very Healthy 4.0 stroked out to 4.7). I have yet to kill a 1310. Nor have I seen (Personally) a 1310 let go. I have seen in more than one case where the Yoke holding the U-joint will let go before the actual joint itself. So no worries, and thanks for adding the experience.

Excuse you?

I was adding tech, and experience. Go elsewhere with your name calling:icon_thumby:

Its the internet, don't take it so seriously (and yeah I :icon_rofl: at that one too :icon_thumby:)

Lookin good so far! Im anxious to see your finished bed bob, I wanna do the same thing!

Yup, 1330's bring the suck. 1310 sized caps on a 1350 sized cross makes it inherently weaker... I spun the caps in my rear driveshaft a few times, they got tacked in the end.

I want to see this thing done, should look good! I was gonna run a BII tank to get more room for a doubler, but now that I'm going with the exhaust down the outside of the frame I may run dual single cab tanks...

The bed bob is rocking along and I'll say once again, I'm extremely greatful to have a good friend that wanted to tackle this part of the project. I swung by to see it last night and it looks awesome!

Depending on how the weather holds out, it could be done as soon as the 16th of this month.

In other news, I'm trying (and failing) to reign in my ADD. For example, tonight alone I:
-Got another portion of the exhaust done (nothing really worth looking at as there is alot more to do)

-Hammed our the rough transmission cross member. I need to aquire/build/modify a tranny mount. I'm not happy with the stockers. So for right now, I have the transmission sitting on a block of steel tacked onto the cross member

-Started farting around with the Doubler shifter

-Removed the stock MC to compare it to my F350 MC. Looks like that swap is a go (need to get a ton of misc brake stuff)

- And I wrapped up the evening by getting some material out to extend the front DS with.

So I started 5 more small projects, and managed not to do a dang that that allowed me to cross something off the list. I suppose it all still counts as progress though right?

The goal this weekend is to get the majority of the brake system plumbed and some sort of working Front DS completed as well. I deally, I'd like to be able to flip the truck around to make getting the bed off/on it easier as I know the bed's going to have a few "test fits" once I get it back home.

We'll see how it all pans out, I'll take pictures, and hopefully I'll have something worth updating by the end of the weekend.

Even progress on random shit is still progress towards the overall awesomeness. Keep at it :headbang:

It just means all of the sudden you'll have 5 things done instead of just the one lol

progress is still progress:icon_thumby::icon_thumby:

hopefully you will have enough progression to have her on the road soon enough.....

It never seems to work that way. Those orginial 5 things quickly turn into 25 things in a hurry :icon_twisted:

Soon enough, I actually managed to accomplish two little things tonight.

- My "Spare" front DS is done (update on that soon)
- I've got the rough exhaust done back to just behind the cab. I still need to mount it, but at least It'll be a little quieter next time I fire it up.

I'm going to try like heck to get the breaks done this weekend. Considering that I've got to replumb the entire system, that sounds like a lofty goal. Wish me luck!

Extending your own driveshaft

Well I’m one more step towards getting the truck mobile again. I extended one of the Cherokee driveshaft’s I have laying around. There’s really not much to this, and I’m hoping I can get the thing to balance out later. If it won’t balance, well, I made a nice spare shaft.

Going by Dana’s information, total allowable run out for the drive shaft is 0.020” which is about what I measured this shaft at when I was done. That’s said a little tongue in cheek though as I really don’t have a good way to measure this at home or at work.

So step 1, acquire your shaft (no not that one, the drive shaft!) and cut it up:
Driveshaft002.jpg

The Cherokee drive shafts are 1.75” on the ID and they are made with 0.120” wall HREW tube. Since its HREW, you can’t just slap a slug in there and call it done.

Enter Step 2, find some “Plug” material and mill a couple of slots to clear the weld slag inside the tube. The extra bonus of the slots is that it makes it easier to keep the two ends of the drive shafts even:

Driveshaft001.jpg

Step 3, hammer it all together as it’s a bit of a press fit. If you have some heat available to you, that’ll make life easier:

Driveshaft003.jpg

Step 4 is a little tricky. I don’t have a good way to hold everything in line, so I bolted the DS back in its home to check for the correct length. While it was there, I slapped a dial indicator on it to rotate and tap in line. This is far from ideal so I’m not so sure on how accurate my 0.020” run out reading really was. But as I said, worse case is I just have a spare shaft now. Add to it, I can’t really remember if this was a good shaft to start with so who knows how good it is at this point :icon_rofl:

Step 5, remove the now tacked together DS from the truck and burn everything home, clean off your slag and you’re done!

Driveshaft004.jpg

As a side note, for my plug, I’ve got an extra 1” that was driven into either side of the DS (I needed to extend the shaft 6.75” and my plug was 8.75” long, dig?). I’m sure this thing will work just fine for a spare, we’ll see how well it does at speed.

Once I find my U bolt’s for the front yoke, I’ll be able to move this thing again (Though, without brakes currently). I’ve bought three of these dang U joint U bolt sets, and I can’t find a single one of the dang things. Go figure right?
