The Horse with no name...

I believe he meant break in period as in fresh gears, not broken

Sorry about that. I really shouldn't be reading/replying in a rush on my way back from lunch.

I realized that after going back and reading what you posted again. My apologies for that. Does your buddy use his truck as a daily driver or is it his weekend play toy?

No worries, I shoulda been more specific. He drives to work and wheels it on the weekrnds.

I DDed my truck for 1.5 yrs, 45min/ 35mi one way, halfway was hilly stop and go, the other half highway.
5.13s w/35"s, got 14mpg average, did 70mph @ 2600rpm.

It really wasn't bad at all, pretty much the same as my 5.0 Explorer, except the Sploder has balls.

4.88's would so much better for 35's in terms of gas. Closer to stock tires/stock gearing.

Way better mpg.

If you were happy with that abismal fuel consumption. Awesome.

I drive 1.5 hours one way for my commute. No way in hell would I live with that crap mileage.

I've always wanted to know why people want to or have sas'd their rig and they complain about mileage. You built the truck to wheel not to cruise down the highway. Don't get me wrong good mpg is a big plus but it shouldn't be the deciding factor on what ratio you run. From what I've learned the gears are for having the power to turn the tires not keep the rpms down. If it bugs you that much run a smaller tire on the street or just don't sas.

This eventually will turn into a DD/trailer queen argument. Do I build it with a lot of gear and then trailer it everywhere just to have fun on the weekends OR do I go with less gear and use it every day since the only real place to ride is over a hour away?

Simple. Not everyone can afford to have two vehicles. Some people are daily drivers and weekend warriors. With one rig. Good mpg is needed even with a SAS. Just because someone does an SAS doesn't mean it's strictly a trail rig.

This was my reason for two years. I was lucky to have a motorcycle which I rode unless it rained or was below 60*. I can't afford to drive my truck to work everyday and it costs me less to have a second vehicle than to fill up the truck every few days.

I wish I could afford a second car. But can't make the initial cost and registration/insurance.
I'd save money in the long run but it's the initial purchase price I can't make right now. Which is the same situation or a few people I know that DD their rig.

My truck costs me $800 in gas per month lol. And that's at 17 mpg yearly average. (Winter kills mileage) so I wheel my truck, and need the big tires so gearing to keep mpg makes perfect sense in mine, and many others situation.
