The Great American Classic


Replaced the cam bearings. When I went to put the cam bearing tool away I realized I broke. Returned it to jegs for a refund. If I ever need one again, I’ll just buy a different brand.

had to pull the block off the stand to do rear cam bearing. I l ok upped it off myself, but I think it’ll be hard to get back on alone. Have to phone a friend on that one.

Put the crank in and did the mains. I’ll wait till it’s back on the stand to do the rest.
 
Just now realizing it’s been two months looking at this thread. Haven’t put anything else on the engine yet. Had to built a small gantry of sorts to lift up the engine and get it back on the stand. I have a spot in the rafters that’s supported so I can use it for lifting, but the car is in the way.
Did that last Saturday.

This was something I slapped together in an hour or so out of scrap. That top piece of stainless tube already had flanges on it with bolt holes. So it's bolted on, this way I can take it apart later if I decide I don't want this eye sore in my driveway.

If I was going to make some improvements I would get an I beam for the top, add gussets to help with the stability, and make the legs longer.


I had some H shaped pieces made of two 2x4 tubes with 3/8" caps and a 3/8" bar across. I cut the bars out with a plasma torch and welded the tubes together end to end, then welded the bars on the bottom to make legs. Then bolted the 1 1/2" tube on top. Burned it all together with some oil soaked 6011 that's been sitting in a very damp toolbox. The oil soaked into the rods caught on fire.

Sounds like you know what you're doing. Others looking might not...
 
At work one of our dyno's has a pipe across the ceiling to help lift the old water brake dyno that one of the older guys that retired made a trolley just using some aluminum spacers for rollers which wasn't optimal... I got smart and ordered up some ball bearings, the trolley is just some 1/4" plate with 3 holes in it, two up top and one below for the chain hoist. On the top I spaced the bearings apart with some washers about 1/2" then more washers or spacers outside to get the rest of the length, works great now, nice and smooth... plus in your case it would spread out the load across more surface area on the round rod since round isn't the strongest in a side load like that...
 
Thanx for the update ! .

As a long time Journeyman Mechanic I too am concerned about that gantry tipping. it's simply not safe as it is .

Once the engine gets off the ground it's going to side load it in various directions, BT & DT, you don't want to .

Good to see some are still learning welding, those welds look good to me .
