i am the brother of mr. mcCracken and i am workin on doin a half ton swap like u have, i have the eddie bower addition bronco same colors as u, i am also looking at putn a 302 or 351w in mine id like to see ur progress on yours if u still r. i have a whole '79 ford f-150 for running gear, and a fullsize bronco to pull the motor out of:icon_welder:

Mine is still getting beat on weekly on the trail, she will keep playing as long as the 4.leaker keeps running or I break something big. Then she'll get parked in the shop for the v8/c4 swap. At that point I'll pull my 68 Rover out of hibernation and continue playing on the trails while I swap parts into the Bronco to better her trail prowess!!

Check out my other wheeler, she hasn't been outta the shop in a few years since I've been playing with the Ford.
She is my pride and joy..... "1968 Land Rover 88 series 2a Station Wagon" (NO IT's NOT A TOYOTA) I've had her since the mid 90's and she's been romped hard and rebuilt several times over the last 15 years. This time around, I swapped in another very healthy small block chebby350 on a custom engine cradle I built, swapped out the th350/np205 for a th400 stage 2 shift kit sitting on a custom cross member I built, np 205 twin sticked for front digs and extra supports holding back of 205. I kept the SOA Lincoln locked Toy 8" diffs, only this time I installed 4.37gears ifs hubs up front and 2" spacers out back and disks all around, I also swapped in a GM 1/2 ton brake master cyl, I stretched the wheel base from 88" to 96" with redrilled leaf spring center pins, I kept the dual 2.5" exhaust into stacks with Dynomax 40's only this time I added full length Hooker headers and Dual Optimas, I also added an engine oil cooler w/fan and trans fluid cooler w/fan up front and kept the rad in the box with dual fans, kept the pack rack and roll cage, and grooved the balding 40x17x15 Gumbos, I recently swapped in Scout II Saginaw steering box and GM 1 ton pump, modded for higher flow, I also swapped a complete GM wiring harness and fuse block in there and rewired everything front to back, She has an old 8000lb Braiden elec winch up front, RCI racing seats and harness inside, and came with the factory removable top, doors and fold down/removable windshield.

I need a huge decal saying "IT'S NOT A JEEP OR LAND CRUISER", LOL, I can't even begin to count how many times it's been called a Jeep or Land Cruiser by uneducated so called 4x4 guys.

These pics are at least a few years old.

This is where she's sitting as of now, waiting patiently for me to call er into action again.
I have been taking her apart and rebuilding/modifying her over the last few years while I romped the Deuce out of the Deuce, lol.

Here's a comparison pic, showing the size of the Rover beside the Bronco on 35's before I fw sas'd it.

Thanks buddy!! I think so too. :D

Bronco II V8 swap:
I have the complete engine computer and harness out of the 91 F150 I pulled the 5.0L from, I have the f150 motor mounts, fuel lines, pumps, steering column, gage cluster, fuse block and all that good stuff. I'm going fuel injected no question about it. I have already cut the ttb cross member out of the Bronco when I swapped in the fw d44/9". I have plans on replacing the A/C heater box with a non A/C heater box or modify mine to suit. I also already have the 3" BL in there to aid in fitment of larger engine and trans bell housing.

I picked up a c4 from a 76 Early Bronco with a 302, and picked up a c4 from a Mustang II for it's V6 bell housing that never got used. I had planned on swapping in the auto while the v6 was running strong, but it never happened as I had trouble finding the c5 out put shaft and tail housing needed for the swap and I wasn't going to spend 460 on the aftermarket out put and adapter. I still don't have the c5 out put shaft and tail housing in my possession yet either otherwise she would be automatic already. So that will need to be located as the build ensues.

If I can't find the c5 parts I need for this swap, I may have to try and find a c6/np205 combo to use instead, not my first choice but I'll do what I have to do to get this project back together when that time comes.

It's too bad too, because I have the v8 and v6 c4's with bell housings and torque converters and the e1354 and m1350, I just need to c5 output and tail housing to complete this set-up. I was also considering doing a doubler.

See the c4/1350 combo is about 9" or so shorter than the fm145/1350 combo I have in there now, or so my research online says anyways. I haven't had a c5/1350 in my possession to physically measure it myself. I figured if I could find a source who can make me a spud shaft to join the 1350 range box to the 1354 tcase and make it long enough so I can make the adapter 9" or so. Then I wouldn't have to do any drive shaft mods and would get a lower low range or roughly 5:1 double low outta the deal.

Once the engine is swapped in with the auto behind it and the tcase I can build a set of dual 2.5" exhaust under there. From what I have read I will need to move the trans cross member as well to line it all up, then drill new holes in the frame for it too.

I already have the f150 fuel pump installed in the bII tank as my pump died last summer. The fuel lines are interchangeable between the 4.0 and 5.0 from what I have read. I'll need to drill 2 new engine mount holes on what's left of the ttb cross member to bolt the engine down. I still need to figure out which flex plate I'll need to run so it fits in the Early Bronco 302 bell housing. The f150 I pulled the engine from was a manual trans truck so no computer problems should be present with the non electric auto trans.

If I find a 351 along the way before the swap begins I'll definitely go that route. The 5.0L I have needs to be resealed anyways, so while it's opened up I might just re-ring it, hone it and toss some new bearings in too, unless i find a better 351.

Some people have said I need the mustang 5.0L intake and convertible motor mounts and mustang II exhaust mans and Maverick rad and yadda yadda yadda. With the ttb cross member gone, heater box modded or removed, body lift and such, if I have to cut the hood for the intake to fit, so be it, I always wanted a hood scoop, lol. I have plans on headers too, shorties or block hugger I heard can work, as well as stock Explorer v8 exhaust mans too. Tho v8 explorers are very rare around here.

Im getting pretty excited about finally have some power in the Bronco and an auto to boot!! She'll finally have enough poop to party with!!!

ivehad a lot of experience with fords i bought my 85 half ton with an auto and a 74 351 windsor i pulled it buit it and bought a 80 4 speed off of a streight 6 bought a clutch pack for the flywheel and slapped it all together, had a wirin problem and it would turn over and over had to pull the battery so i rewired it all and found out v8s r externally ballenced and straight sixs r internally basiclly the flywheel woulda shook my motor to pieces so i bought a v8 flywheel and its been fine ever since

i later bought a 87 5 speed and bolted it right up came off of another straight six, had transfer case problems went threw tons and between 5 speed 4 speed and auto trannys even half three quater and 1 ton they all bolt up just fine as for fly wheel sizes between years as long as its a small block its a small block and same with big they all bolt up just fine,.

and as for a body lift in ur bII idk if u have to cause if u just type in v8s in bronco IIs on google the first one that pops up this guy did it in 10 days coulda been less, but he never put in a body lift he made more work for himself by gettn a car motor and havin to change oil pans but he did it no prob and has lots of good pics ti choose from.

Oh for sure, the BL will just make my life easier during the swap, and besides it's already installed in the bronco and has been for several years, lol. Bumpers and stuff built around the BL, so it's not coming out.

From what I have read online the older 302's used a different flex plate than the newer 5.0L. My worry was they are a different bolt pattern or different over all diameter or different tooth count or different mounting depth. Would be nice to use the manual starter I have for it but not sure if the manual/auto starters on the sbf are the same or not.

I have found conflicting info tho, you know the Internet, sifting through what someone says works and someone who actually had it work are 2 different things.

I still have research to do for sure. I'm no newbie to engine swaps, fabricating components or that type stuff, but I want to make this swap as easy and inexpensive as possible. I'll have most if not all my bases covered before the wrenches leave the tool box.

The 4.leaker swap in mine looks factory, not that it was hard as it's a very similar engine to the 2.9L that I pulled out of it. I want to make the v8 swap look factory as well, or at lease close to it.

So you say the flex plates are the same no matter what small block application it's for?? So a 90 f150 5.0L would use the same flex plate as a 76 Early Bronco 302? What about starters? Does it make a difference between auto trans and manual? Like the 4.0L takes a different depth starter for the manual than it does for the auto. What about torque converters, The v6 torq has 3 bolts and the v8 has 4 bolts, is that a standard as well? Like all sbf v8 autos would have the 4 bolt torque converter?

Ball's to the wall wheelin, That looks pretty damn slippery. If I where to wheel like that my front axle would puke before too long and I would have to deal with tree hugger's petitioning to close the trails for soil degregation, wet land destruction, and whatever else they could throw at me. They allready bitch and moan about truck designated trail's, orv trail's and snowmobile trail's.

Well, cold snap finally broke, it's a baumy -6*C today !!! Yaahoo!!

Hopefully get some odds and ends done to the Deuce in the next few days, ready it for some winter fun!!
