How much more work would it be to swap in a 4.0 instead of replaceing the 3.0 that is in there now? I hydrolocked it so I need a new engine ( please dont suggest v8 cause I dont have the time or money to deal with that right now)
Thanks

After some research I decided I will probably do the 4.0 swap so should I use the OHV or the SOHC version ( my truck is for the trails) and does anyone have them one for sale in the pacific Northwest.

Benny if you do that swap you will need a complete donor vehicle. EVERYTHING is dofferent and must be swapped. From the radiator to the tailpipe, everything must be swapped.
Unless you have already installed solid gold seat covers you'd be far better off to put a 3.0 back in there and then trade it for what you really want.
Remember you will need radiator, engine, all boltons, transmission, both driveshafts, all wiring, maybe gauges, exhaust system and no telling what else.

Why driveshafts? They are all the same once they narrowed it down to two transmissions that both have the same lengths.

7.5 will get along just fine with a 4.0.

a 4.0 has the distinct advantage of being possible with all factory parts, presumeably from junkyard donors.

with an EEC5 truck it is possible to do a 5.0 by using a 5.0 explorer donor, but there may be oil pan/exhaust issues.

IF you had a 1998-up ranger an explorer 5.0 swap would be a bunch easier.

I found 2 explorer part outs in my area for 400 bucks, how much work would I be looking at with a full part out to work with?

you are looking at ---at least a week if you have never done this before
if you know some one close to you that has try to get them to come help from the start so they can point you in the right direction
i would think real hard before i do this
me i would just do a new 3.0

I can go with out my truck for a week plus I work evenings so I have all day to work on it plus a close friend of mine is a mechanic and he always gives me help on it so I have lotsa support, and recently my hours went up at work so next pay check should be my biggest yet.
