The Dana 35 Sucks Too

Should I fix my 35 or just build the 44 and do the SAS sooner?

Sounds like nothing more than blown spiders (the case still looking fine from the outside is WAY different than that exploded D28 you pic'ed above, too :icon_confused: ).

I'd drop an Aussie or Lockright locker in there if that's what happened.

my bet is hub issues. I guess we will find out! Hurry up and tear into that baby.

That's what I'm hoping to find, don't know about the locker though. I'm pretty much dead set on the SAS:icon_thumby:. I wanna run 37"s. Got the axle w/ f-150 outers already. Need to get 5.13s, a Detroit, and forged axles. But thats another story. I'm jackin my own thread here.

I'll prolly just weld it up for now if it is the spiders, I got a few sets of spare hubs lyin around. And yes I do know what I'd be getting into.

Now how would that be, if I previously stated that niether of the axles spun???

Didn't realize you said axles. Thought you were driving in 4lo and just had alot of rear wheelspin. Yeah if the axles aren't spinnin, spiders sound better:icon_thumby:

Sounds like part of your problem was mileage (200k+) and "abuse" (OK, abuse vs. hard wheeling). Doesn't sound like an inherent D35 problem?

In any case I'd fix the 35 and build the 44 in your spare time... maybe a different one... as drum brakes don't make a whole lot of sense.

ya the 28 came in the bII and ya the 35 is stronger than hell. it puts up with my abuse of jumping 5-6 feet in the air, crawling and or plowing its way. only weak piont ive found on them are the hubs, ball joints and wheel bearings. I welded the 35 gears as well. i would rebuild the 35 and put the 44 knuckles on it explaned in the tech forum. I have a B2 that had a 28, then a 35, and now a full size 44 ttb under the front end of it(still in progress btw)

Ok, So I put it up on the lift, pulled the front tires off, Inspected and spun everything. And in doing so I found enough damage already to reason a SAS. I must have bought the truck with most of the damage, cause I never did anything that would f@*k this much up.
:damnit1:
Left hub is blown
Both axle retaining washers and clips are destroyed
Both radius arm mounts are destroyed
One radius arm is shot
Both axle pivot brackets are bent
Both I-Beams are bent
Center U-joint has play
Missing teeth on the ring and pinion
Broken spider gears

I think this is plenty of reason to do the SAS. My passenger side shaft rubs the beam where it goes through, the driveshaft rubs the radius arm crossmember. The front end is F@*KED!!! The idiot I used to work with who did my alignment couldn't figure out why my caster was so far out... I wonder why! :temper:

I learned the hardway, never buy a truck from someone who used to drive into the woods just to find a place to get stoned. I can't even drive this thing now. Now my broke ass has to find money for a beater while this crap gets fixed.:pissedoff:

see, we told you it was abuse and neglect.....

Dang! That's a lot of damage

You might want to make sure the frame isn't fawked on that thing too.

Where do I go to get my frame checked? A good body shop should be able to do that right? I've never had to have one checked before.

I've decided to just put my 44 under my truck without building it first. Just doin the outers w/ new bearings and disc brakes and ball joints for now. Then I'll build the internals, and swap the shafts later. Cause I can't afford a locker, R&P, and axles right now, But I'll at least be able to drive my truck.
What do you guys think? Probably cheaper than fixin the 35 at this point.

Yes, a good collision shop will be able to check your frame, but it won't be cheap. Somewhere between $100-300 just to measure it. Ask them what they use to measure with, a laser measuring system is best. Preferably the chief genesis velocity system. This will measure all aspects and planes of your frame. Though you could easily check for diamond by running a tape measure between common holes and x checking to make sure it is square at least. If you have a very flat garage floor, you can get a rough height measurement to the floor. Remember though, that unless you set the truck on four jackstands, some height issues may be the suspension and not the frame. Length can be measured also by common holes, though crossmembers and suspension may get in the way of accurate measurements. For accurate measurements, use a metric tape measure. For Fords, 4mm and under difference is in spec, 5mm or more is out of spec.

Thanks for the info about straightening my frame. Now its definately bent. I got hit today by this '07 Infinity and now my nose is 4" off from the cab. My hood won't shut, my lights are busted, I had to remove my fanshroud so the cooling fan could spin, cracked my windshield, bent my tierod, and my LF tire is cambered out.

I only got 2 miles down the road, after putting my "Chicks Dig Body Damage" sticker on.

All the pics are after we used my buddys winch to pull my bumper back out a foot or so. It was pushed into the tire with the tire turned full left.

dude.....

that one day of wheeling good trails with 300 hp.:shok: wasnt even close to making me sas....

thats what i was calling livable and managable:taunt:

as for that hit, from the pics that damn thing looks goo to go to me.

if you ever plan on actually wheeling that thing, just have a decent alignment is good enough....

straight frame.....

never, at least on a truck that gets used.

straight frames are for sissies.:stirthepot:

The front of my truck is so bent the hood won't shut and it overlaps both fenders. Physically there's not that much damage, but all of the impact was on my bumper and frame. I got ahold of my buddy who has a frame machine at his house, we'll pull it back, I'll buy another set of lights, and I'll be set. I just want my hood to shut and be somewhat aligned.

Bobbywalter I agree, It's a Ranger not a Ferarri, but the damn hood has to shut.

steel is better but if you get hit with a bumper like mine it will bend the hell out of your frame! a little give is a good thing
