i am building a 4.0 soch motor. it has what im assuming a counterbalance in the oil pan that has a chain running to the crank to turn it. i wanna know what would happen if i didnt put that back in the motor. i would like to think i really dont need it and would free up a lil spinning weight. if any one has any info on this it would be very very appreciated. thanks

i was in the same boat as you . i just did a sohc swap and my tensioner was broke.. the 04 4x4 motor i took out of my dads 04 ranger didnt have that balance was supposed to. only thing i could find online about it was it was designed to help with vibrations....... as far as taking it out looks like it would be cake except for the gear on the crank..

If you remove it you will have to do something about its oil supply or you will end up with no oil pressure.
