The cast iron thread

I got this little Lodge sportsman’s grill a few years ago but it was missing the handle and front door. I found that they still make those parts so now it’s complete and I’m finally using it!

How is it?

I have always been intrigued but the size and weight have been a deterrent so far. (trying to find a more compact/lightweight alternative to my mini Weber)

Mixed feels. It’s messy, but I used 73/27 beef for the burgers. Grease leaking out the bottom… I guess a guy could throw it in the campfire after use to clean it up. Lack of a lid means you have to keep an eye on it or dump the coals out. I had a mini Weber before and this burns way hotter and much more efficiently. It was fun to cook on and I think it would be perfect for something like kabobs.

I’d probably give it a 4/10, it would be an 8 if there was a lid.

ok... it is time to really clean and season my large skillet. usually I use olive oil and cook it in the oven or gas grill.

What is your favorite go to oil for seasoning cast iron?

Last time I actually did a "clean and re-season" on one, I used Crisco. But, day-to-day use gets a mix of olive oil, bacon grease and butter, with olive oil being most prevalent. I think you could just go with that.

Back in the day, I followed my Grandma's lead and used bacon rendering from the container on the stove.
Since I became civilized, I use olive oil.

Honestly for purely seasoning purposes I've never had a reason to stop using vegetable oil. It seems to do the job well. For actual cooking I virtually never use it.

I've always used Crisco for seasoning. Bacon grease, butter, or olive oil for cooking and maintenance.

I'm gonna make some people mad here, but I've never had a problem putting it in the dishwasher then drying & spraying with whichever cooking spray is closest...

FWIW, I've been using flaxseed oil for the last few years and it works extremely well. It has a higher smoke point than most other oils/greases so you can bake it on at 450F with little to no smoke and when cooled makes a very hard finish.

Something's weird there - it's smoke point is down around 225 degrees. That said, I've definitely heard fast things about it for seasoning, just never tried it.

I think the last time I did it... there was some butter flavored Crisco... after my mom made peanut butter cookies.

I use whatever I have on hand, traditionally Crisco, but it doesn’t really matter. I season cast iron outside in the bbq grill.

I use soap on it too… never hurt it at all 🤭

I think that's 225C. I just looked it up and I found 437F.
