The autumn years of the ICE should be the golden years for the ICE.

What’s the benefit to a manufacturer to allow another brand to rebadge a car? ie: what did Ford gain from the Mazda B series?

Money 😅 I'm sure Mazda probably payed them X amount up front with another X amount per vehicle sold or something.

Ford owned Mazda at one point. Less design cost and it made Ford money in more sales.

It’s becoming a more and more common thing and not just with vehicles. GM and Ford share some transmissions now. VW is using the Dodge minivan as their van. So forth and so on.

I forgot Ford owned Mazda for awhile..

Ford's also back to helping out the krauts.. whatever the Volkswagen truck is called is just a new Ranger apparently.

Ooh.. I'm relatively sure some Volvos have Ford motors in them too.

Getting to brand loyalists too?… Ford gets to sell a truck to folks who would never buy an American vehicle.

Its funny too...i remember reading consumer reports in the day....an obvious biased mag. They would rate the B series better then the ranger

FWIW they were cheaper and Mazda had a better warranty too.

But yeah, they went beyond that.

Can’t name one off the top of my head, but I still see that happening. Probably Hyundai vs Kia articles.

Ford at least had a controlling share in them at one point. They dabbled quite a bit in the world automotive market for a while. I’m not sure what they all own now.

One way to do it for sure. A lot of big companies own a lot of different brands anymore. They get you coming and going.

Ford got 1st the Mazda B1800 pickup, giving them a compact pickup - Courier - while they decide if the market was real or not and then something to sell while they developed the Ranger. Followed by a good manual transmission - M5OD which they put 100s of thousands into Rangers, Explorers, Bronco II, Aerostar (the R1), T-Birds, Cougars, F-150, Econoline & Bronco (R2). Finally, the 2.3 Duratec - which is really the Mazda L for Ranger and some others.

Mazda got a midsized pickup to replace the B2200 without having to develop a whole new vehicle, just a couple body panels, a grill and some interior bits and pieces.

Probably one of the best collaborations - both sides made out well from it.

Ford got the Courier and the Probe from Mazda, that should have been grounds for a divorce right there. Instead Ford allowed Mazda to rebadge Explorers as Navajos and Rangers as B series. That's like taking someone out for an expensive dinner after they crapped in your oatmeal. The first Navajos came with square headed, two sided Ford keys but Consumer Reports tested one and said it felt tight and Japanese. After they had turned the Ford key to start it.

Ford owned or had controlling interest in Mazda, Land Rover, Jaguar and a few others in the 90's and early 2000's. They sold off pretty much all of that instead of taking a Government bailout like some other companies have done. Yes, they did accept low interest loans from the government, but IIRC, they paid it all back. Unlike some other companies.

They improved jag to an extent didn’t they? Solved a bunch of electrical gremlins is what I have heard.

When they bought Jag, there was nothing to do but improvements. They were terrible. However, they did get the Lincoln LS out of the deal. That was a pretty sweet car.
