Yeah, but thats "new fangled stuff".
I grew up with bolt guns and Garands.
AR's were just coming out and nobody trusted them. Besides, they shot "little itty bitty bullets", not manly stuff like 30.06 and .308.

The AR-10 was first and was chambered in .308. Thank the politicians for forcing the Air Force AR-15 on the rest of the services. The Air Force was just looking for a light rifle for guard duty. Not combat. IIRC McNamara was the one who forced the issue. Made NATO members rather angry too since they had just converted over to 7.62X51 NATO (.308) at the United States insistence for cartridge commonality.

Yeah, but I grew up with the M14 and then had a # of M1A.
THAT was a battle rifle. Soak it in mud/crud/sand, and it would never fail.

Our VFW has Garands. Never held or shot an M-14 or M1A. The Garand is nice though the magazine/clip system is a bit ungainly compared to a removable magazine. The M-14 died before it should have. There was nothing wrong with the rifle.

Just an updated lighter version of the Garand with select fire and a 20 round box magazine. Not as "stout" as the Garand. You could hammer in fence posts with a Garand and it would still keep on kickin.
Really did like that rifle. Got very familiar with it in the Navy in 66/67 before the plastic guns took over.

I must apologize about my earlier post about almonds not being able to be milked.
It seems that there are female almonds that produce milk for the masses.
My humble apology.

I drink almond milk. And in the military, my weapon of choice was the mk48 torpedo. I spent 4 years pushing a torpedo room around the oceans. I did qualify on the 1911 handgun platform and m-14.
