I know a couple of you guys are down in Tennessee. I need to know what the electricity rates are like down there.

My sister is going to school in Nashville and wants to move off campus next semester. I'm trying to get an idea of what she can expect to spend on electricity and such.

Actually trying to talk her out of it, but she won't listen to reason.

Trying to talk her out of what - going to school in TN or moving off-campus?

If she's a freshman they may not let her live OC anyway. Vandy, Fisk (I doubt it) or Belmont?

TN electric rates aren't bad at all, particularly if you have TVA service. A lot of my family has TVA (or local electric bought thru TVA) and it's very reasonable.

She is going to be a junior at Belmont. There is no talking her out of school there, its one of the best audio engineering programs in the country. Also happens to be where most of those jobs are.

The real issue is that she is in every club, student organization, and anything else that will take her and taking all AP courses. Most nights she doesn't have time to sleep, let alone trying to work to pay bills on top of it all. Last year I scrapped by working 20 hours a week and was still eating broke people food. Hamburger Helper was my Fillet Mignon. She can't find 3 hours a week to tutor people. She still won't accept that she can't handle it.

I just know that PPL is beginning to be a pain in my wallet. Almost $100 just to heat my 40 sq ft apt.

Well, I live in Harrison which is north of Chattanooga. We have all electric, 1500 sq ft house. Our adverage monthly bill from Volunteer Electric Co-Op is $110.00 to 120.00 and we aren't much of the typical tree hugging energy savers.

Cheap.

ad, just let her be. She'll figure it out eventually that there are but 24 hours to a day.

You live in a closet???

This is a common mistake young people make. During my first year of university (oh so long ago) I was taking a full course load, AND working 2 jobs in order to make ends meet. I ended up having a nervous breakdown, dropping out of my first year of school, and having to take a year off before I could go back to school. Overdoing it when you're in school is a baaad idea. But try telling your sister that, right?

Pretty much on both counts.

My place is more or less a closet. It used to be the attic of the house. It actually probably closer to 200 sq ft, including the bathroom, but the point remains.

As for my sister, she is pushing herself too hard as it is, which she is prone to do. She almost had a breakdown in high school from pushing herself to the max and then some. And no, you can't tell her anything.

I remember once when we were kids we were supposed to be cleaning up the back yard of leaves in the fall, and she refused to help, or even move just because I excepted her to help. So I picked her up and move her, dang if she didn't march herself right back to that same spot after kicking me, and then got right back to not moving.

what ever the rent and utilities would be.... with a room mate it will be about 75% of what it costs to stay in the dorm.

when I was in college my food budget was $12 a week. I lived basically off ground turkey, dried beans, rice, and top ramen......... I did my laundry by hand in the bath tub......

I didn't quite have to go to those extremes, but after a semester of living off campus, on my own, I realized that I'd have been better off to stay on campus.

I am not a people person, never have been, never pretended to be. I'd more than likely have killed any roommate I tried to have off campus and then thrown the body off the bridge in the middle of the night.

In my 2 years on campus I very nearly did just that several times. But at least all the utilities were paid for there, taking some of the stress off.

The only reason I can live with the wife and not kill her is that she is a very loving, caring person who grew up in a very twisted family and thus is uniquely equipped to deal with and appreciate my special brand of crazy.

Are we brothers, by any chance?

8cents per kilowatt is what I pay. But there is a catch, living within knoxville city limits they add a monthly greywater charge of not less than 80 bux. This is not part of your water bill. I dont know about nashville. We had KUB utilities I believe they are part of TVA

isn't that like way high? I pay like 2 cents a kilowatt........ My average electric bill around $40 in the winter with all my electronics, washer/dryer 2 refrigerators, 1 deep freeze chest freezer and a stand up deep freezer, and 3 kids that think it is their personal mission to leave every light in the house on ........ my Summer time bill is about $75 and I rock 3 air conditioners to keep my 720 sqft cooled off to 70*
