so my 88 bronco 2 is lacking in power and when lightly on the throttle the rpms rase up and down between 2 and 3000 also the car will just shut off at random times sometimes while driving and especialy in reverse I have no idea what it could be but the check engine light comes on and off randomly other than that the truck runs and drives fine anyone knows anything please help thanks

Welcome to the forum, but sry, dont have even a guess as to what the problem might be, could be electrical or fuel related, have you tried cleaning the carb and replacing the fuel filter? testing the fuel pump flow?

Lance,
I think the 88 has fuel injection and is computer controlled.
Lakai,
You should pull the codes and post them up here. Use the "google search" feature at the top of the page to find out how.
Good luck,

Richard

oh ya right,,,duh, I got a carb.

still, pretty tough to guess from the description.

and btw Richard... Thx,I like my new back hatch:)

If engine cuts out and doesn't sputter and then die I would say electrical issue, either spark is being stopped or fuel injectors are being stopped.

The Ford TFI ignition system could get "buggy" as wiring gets older, there is a good read here and a worksheet you can print and go through the system step by step:
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TFI_Diagnostic.html

make sure to move wires around when testing OHMs or Voltage, to see if there is a loose or shorting wire.

There are also 2 or 3 relays on the passenger fender, Green base is the fuel pump relay, Brown base is the EEC(computer) relay.
Brown relay turns on the fuel injectors, along with several other engine components.
Pull out the relay from the base and make sure connections are clean, also check the wires going into the base for fraying.

Does the engine restart easily after dieing?
