On a cold day, After about a 10-15 mile drive the temp gauge will barely get above the cold mark, the heat works fine. In the morning when i start it the temp gauge reads way below the cold mark and slowly creeps up just past the cold mark. Just trying to figure out what is wrong before i replace parts. This is on a 98 4.0 with a non tach gauge cluster. Thought about replacing the rad cap, but i don't know if that would help.

My temp gauge also reads low but the coolant is hot, heat in cab will run you out.

I have thought about changing out the sending unit , but it really does not bother me that much.

Changing the radiator cap will do nothing for the gauge.

Well when you guys figure it out, let me know, cause I have the same issue in my 90. Temp gauge never gets over C, thinking I need a new temp sensor?

Sure sounds like the senser has a bad connection or is kaput!

Either CTS or you all have a 160* thermostat like I do and need swap it out for a hotter model. Thats my next move I think. I bet you all get bad mileage huh(worse than regular 4.0)
